Features of The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek PDF

The bestselling historical fiction novel from Kim Michele Richardson, this is a novel following Cussy Mary, a packhorse librarian and her quest to bring books to the Appalachian community she loves, perfect for readers of William Kent Kreuger and Lisa Wingate. The perfect addition to your next book club! The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek PDF

The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything—everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome’s got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.

Cussy’s not only a book woman, however, she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.

Inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a story of raw courage, fierce strength, and one woman’s belief that books can carry us anywhere—even back home.

Look for The Book Woman’s Daughter, the next novel from Kim Michele Richardson coming in May 2022.

Well researched. Written using language ,place in time. I was impressed with the writers knowledge of Appalachia. The Pack Horse Librarians. She wrote a believable story of a young girl that had a hard life because of the color of her skin. Gave her courage, knowledge, compassion. A very unusual name I had never heard before. Pronounced different than you think. You will be her champion from the very first. Cry with ,laugh feel her loss ,the anguish , At times you will want to reach in the book and slap someone and enjoy her journey. Her patrons will become alive to you and you are wondering how they will all fit in a librarian life but for they do. The history of the Pack Horse Librarians is a story in its own. Kim writes so well you are right there on the trail.,feel the quietness of the forrest and the mountains. Anticipation of the next book drop. I had to do some research my self about Blue people didn’t know at first of they were real or just in her imagination. They are a very interesting subject. Well worth your time to read this book. I wonder who you will choose to be your favorite patron.

A Beautiful Story!!

I love this book! In the 1930’s and 40’s, the WPA established the Pack Horse Library Project in order to provide books and other reading materials to rural areas. Cussy Mary Carter is one of those librarians. But that’s not all. Cussy Mary has an inherited condition called methemoglobinemia, which causes the skin to be blue. It was not until the 1960’s that studies were done to determine the cause of the condition. So this book is a tribute not only to the Book Women who rode countless miles to deliver knowledge and pleasure to the mostly poor communities, but also to anyone who rises above persecution. Finally, it is a commentary on the very hard lives of coal miners in 1930’s Kentucky. One can’t help but admire Cussy and cry with her over the injustices of a forced marriage, starvation, and prejudice, as well as share her pride and fulfillment in bringing books to people who wouldn’t have otherwise had them. This is a great book for anyone who loves books and loves history.

This is a good story.

I haven’t cried over a book for a while but I did cry over this one. The storytelling is good. She writes in the voice of the people and describes the scenes vividly so that you feel there. There are really more stories than the book woman. It’s also a story of Appalachia, extreme poverty, discrimination, women’s sufferings, miners, and a love story. You know the struggles were real, even though this is fiction. I haven’t written to many authors as a fan but I will this one.

Interesting story about a little known subject
May 22, 2019

The Book Woman is based on a time during the Great Depression when single women were hired to deliver books and other reading materials to the remote areas in the Appalachia mountains. I had no idea this had happened and didn’t know about the blue mountain people.

The story gives a clear picture into the struggles of coal mining communities, the casual racism that lumped all people who weren’t white into the same bucket of feared and despised, and the power of medical and law enforcement authorities.

I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot. I felt the ending was rushed and that there were too many story lines crammed into the book. It would have been more satisfactory for me if there had been fewer characters and more depth to the stories of Henry, Angeline and others who we barely got to know.

Sorrow Overcome
June 5, 2019

When one falls in love with the main character, when that character surprises with her persistence to do well in the face of adversity, one becomes anxious and scared for what might happen next, then relieved that once again, this Pack Horse librarian has survived still another horrifying experience. Backed by extensive research into this WPA program, the intriguing blood disease of methemoglobinemia, along with the harsh lives of people living in the Kentucky hills during the thirties, Kim Richardson writes a poignant story of hope for better, if only the current day can be survived. The extremes of poverty are still in our news today. Children continue to go hungry and some continue to care little for them. Cussy Mary, this pack woman, did care, brought things of great value to those people in the hills. She brought books and pamphlets, maps and magazines. Sometimes she taught them to read; others she read to.
Told in the first person, one can tell Cussy Mary knows language, is a reader, reveling in stories of places she can only dream of. She describes her experiences with honesty, sometimes in sorrow, often in beauty. On the death of a child to whom she brought book nourishment, although she could not bring him food: “‘Why couldn’t you let him grow up?’ I curled myself into a tight ball on the blood-soaked Kentucky soil, wailing for Henry and all the Henrys in these dark hollows who’d never be a common grown-up. Stuck forever as Peter Pans.” And – “the July morning was boiling, the blanket of air clammy, pleated with buzzes of excitement all over the town and its tiny Independence Day celebration.” I enjoyed this story, but it was a tough one to know because the basic sorrows continue today.
