NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The Beatles: Get Back PDF

The most anticipated book in more than a decade by the legendary band, The Beatles: Get Back is the official account of the creation of their final album, Let It Be, told in The Beatles’ own words, illustrated with hundreds of previously unpublished images, including photos by Ethan A. Russell and Linda McCartney. Half a century after the 1970 Let It Be album and film, this milestone book coincides with the global release of Peter Jackson’s documentary feature film, The Beatles: Get Back.

The book opens in January 1969, the beginning of The Beatles’ last year as a band. The BEATLES (The White Album) is at number one in the charts and the foursome gather in London for a new project. Over 21 days, first at Twickenham Film Studios and then at their own brand-new Apple Studios, with cameras and tape recorders documenting every day’s work and conversations, the band rehearse a huge number of songs, culminating in their final concert, which famously takes place on the rooftop of their own office building, bringing central London to a halt.

The Beatles: Get Back tells the story of those sessions through transcripts of the band’s candid conversations. Drawing on over 120 hours of sound recordings, leading music writer John Harris edits the richly captivating text to give us a fly-on-the-wall experience of being there in the studios. These sessions come vividly to life through hundreds of unpublished, extraordinary images by two photographers who had special access to their sessions—Ethan A. Russell and Linda Eastman (who married Paul McCartney two months later). Also included are many unseen high-resolution film-frames, selected from the 55 hours of restored footage from which Peter Jackson’s documentary is also drawn.

Legend has it that these sessions were a grim time for a band falling apart. However, as acclaimed novelist Hanif Kureishi writes in his introduction, “In fact this was a productive time for them, when they created some of their best work. And it is here that we have the privilege of witnessing their early drafts, the mistakes, the drift and digressions, the boredom, the excitement, joyous jamming and sudden breakthroughs that led to the work we now know and admire.” Half a century after their final performance, this book completes the story of the creative genius, timeless music, and inspiring legacy of The Beatles.

The Writers

THE BEATLES are the bestselling music act of all time. Between 1962 and 1970 John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr released thirteen albums as a band, made five films together, and topped the charts all over the world. Until 1966 they toured the world to unprecedented mass acclaim, inspiring the phenomenon of Beatlemania. Their creativity stretched the possibilities of popular music and ― working with their producer George Martin ― they revolutionized studio recording processes. They had an unrivalled impact on the music industry, fashion, popular culture and society in the 1960s and beyond, and their influence persists today.

PETER JACKSON is an Academy Award winning director, producer and screenwriter. His films include The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies as well as the BAFTA nominated World War One documentary They Shall Not Grow Old. In 2018 he began work on a new documentary about The Beatles’ 1969 Let It Be sessions, making use of the 55 hours of footage that have never been seen.

HANIF KUREISHI is the author of The Buddha of Suburbia, which won the Whitbread Prize for Best First Novel, The Black Album, Intimacy, The Last Word, The Nothing, and What Happened? His screenplay for My Beautiful Laundrette received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay. Kureishi has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the PEN Pinter Prize, and is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. His work has been translated into thirty-six languages.

JOHN HARRIS writes for The Guardian and Mojo magazine. His books include The Last Party, about the culture of the 1990s, and the definitive account of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon. In 2018, he contributed an essay to the 50th anniversary edition of The Beatles’ White Album.

ETHAN A. RUSSELL is a multiple Grammy®-nominated photographer, director and author of four books. He is the only photographer to have shot covers for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. He was invited by The Beatles to photograph the band’s recording sessions in January 1969 and his images adorn the sleeve of the Let It Be album.

A Mixed Bag
October 13, 2021

The book arrived today and I read it, skimming half of the text. While I am a huge Beatles fan, the transcript of conversations is a tough read. Maybe it’s because they knew they were being recorded, or maybe it’s group-speak that means little to outsiders. Or maybe it’s because they were stoned half the time. Either way, if you are looking for a book where people speak in whole sentences, this is not that book. Much of the talk is trivial or filler. And this is the “good” stuff – imagine what they left out.

The pictures are nice. The movie stills are small, but the larger images make the book worthwhile.

That said, it’s still interesting to read this and get a feel for what their work was like in the studio. Which is not easy, since you’re missing the songwriting part, the audio itself, and the sound mixing. A few lines made me laugh out loud. Until the movie comes out on Disney+ I can only imagine what some of these clips actually sound like.

I have the original “Let It Be” movie on a bootleg DVD, but it was so boring I didn’t watch most of it. Hopefully Peter Jackson does a better job. As this book shows, much of what they said was dull stuff. If you are looking for profound insight, you will be disappointed. At least you can skim it, which is hard to do with an audio recording.

Part of me thinks that the Beatles must have been crazy to even think of documenting their music-making. On the other hand, it makes for a historical document that doesn’t exist for their earlier albums.

One thing I realized while reading the book: What, they started filming in January and expected to do a concert on the 18th? And it got pushed back to the 30th. So they basically whipped an album together in a month?! Granted, some songs had already been started, but what kind of group can go from raw to ready in a month? The Beatles, that’s who. And when they didn’t like the results, they made “Abbey Road for a September release. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! Today’s groups can barely get one album out per year.

Some comments are notable, like George talking about doing his own album. When he briefly left the group, the rest had no trouble naming possible replacements. It must have been a shock to John and Paul when “All Things Must Pass” came out. Too bad George’s later work was rather dismal. But it goes to show how much creativity there was just from being in each other’s orbit. Even Ringo wrote a song. What a great ride they had, and what a great legacy they left us.

RIPOFF!
October 13, 2021

I’m appalled at this shoddy book. Almost every single photo is blurry, even ones which we’ve all seen a thousand times, as sharp as can be. I have the original softback “GET BACK” book which was sold in select theaters back in ’71 when the film was released, There was nothing wrong with those photos, most of which are in this book. A rushed lousy downmarket ripoff to cheat fans. Shame on Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Olivia. None of you need money. This is a slap in the face to fans, an insult. I’m disgusted.

Meh
October 13, 2021

Have done 1 quick scan & then a slow one. My immediate reaction is, it’s basically the original ‘Get Back’
book with some different pics & better dialog transcription. Unfortunately a lot of the photos are blurry & seem out of focus. Buyers be happy you didn’t buy through the Beatles store. $60 + shipping ! At least this book didn’t immediately begin to come apart like the original ‘GET BACK’ book.
I think because of all the delays & fans anticipation this project will equally please & disappoint. A perusal of the track listing of the upcoming album release is a case in point. Over 20 hours of multi-track recordings, over a 100 hours of Nagra reels & this is the song selection ? Time & distance will judge if Apple hit a home run or they struck out. Don’t throw out all those bootlegs yet.

Incredible book! Great companion piece!
October 12, 2021

While it would have been nice for Peter Jackson to release the book and series simultaneously, this book gives a preview to the upcoming series; serving a companion piece to it. This is a solid coffee table book, excellent photos, and transcripts from each day of the tumultuous Get Back sessions. A must have for any Beatles fan!

Terrible picture quality.
October 19, 2021

A big disappointment. There is an inconsequential and badly written foreword by Harif Kureishi, who is completely unrelated to this project, like there is a lack of participants in the Let it Be project.
But the worst is the picture quality, they are blurry, with no details. The re are 2 pillars for this book, pictures and text. The text is what it is, transcripts of the dialogues during filming, and the other one, the pictures, so 50% of the book is a waste. Looks worse than one of those cheap collections of Beatle photos you find in the bargain section of your local bookstore. Truly disappointing.

Inside Beatles different than inside baseball.
October 17, 2021

This is the story of how civil the Beatles were to each other during their breakup. Ostensibly rehearsing for a live show, which they discuss and argue about ad nauseam, Michael Lindsay-Hogg was granted access to film a promotional documentary for a live performance of songs from Let It Be. No wonder he threw his hands up and left it to a director who would be born a year later. Paul admitted he’s at his best when under pressure, during this short period they wrote not for one album but two. Astonishing that Abbey Road was recorded weeks later. Obviously performing songs from their youth was preferable to trying to perform the White Album, this is them recording an album that was as close as the Beatles ever got to standard, despite Let It Be, Across The Universe, and others. It’s clear in the dialog that Paul wanted Let It Be a step back to the musical simplicity of their roots. They had more fun breaking up than most successful bands had in their lifetimes. What I hated was not getting the lobby cards through .

Amazing book, slightly damaged in shipping
October 15, 2021

I got this for my daughter, who is a huge Beatles fan. The book is wonderful but it was slightly damaged in shipping and that’s why the 4 star review. It was shrink-wrapped and placed directly in the sizable box with no bubble wrap. And so the corners are a bit bent, but not enough for us to return it. It should be wrapped in bubble wrap when shipped.

Absolutely Stunning
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2021

This is an absolutely stunning & beautiful coffee table style book! I’ve got many Beatle books & this is ‘up there’ with the best.
Many of the pictures I’ve not seen before & the accompanying text is very informative.
This is a wonderful accompaniment to the up and coming reissue of Let it Be. Honestly; if you’re a music / Beatles fan then you WILL enjoy this glorious book. The quality & content are excellent.
I’m over the moon with this.
