“Black Warrant” is a must-read for anyone willing to comprehend how Tihar jail is a microcosm of the society we all live in. It is no different from the outside world and every paragraph is a hair-raiser as it confirms our suspicions about the perverted operations in Tihar
Engaging yet disturbing

Read it in one go. There are instances of prison escapes and prisonlife which one could have only thought of in movies or part of someones wicked imagination. It keeps you engaged with the stories of high profile prisoners, internal working of tihar and the rampant corruption. What I love the most about this book is that it has brought out (or at least tried) a humane side of prisoners, a side which is not often discussed in media.

I read almost half of the pages of this book at a time! Kudos to Author who has tried and narrate almost all the aspects of jail terms and inmates therein. Simple wordings and effective contents.

The book gives details about the functioning of Tihar Jail and some of the major stories around intimates given of capital punishment ( I personally do not agree a state should give capital punishment).
What I really liked brief mention how social life of families of people who work in Tihar Jail( for any jail ) get impacted ( similar sentiment I have heard from my friends whose parents work in Police )
Sunil Gupta thanks for sharing your story and how can a person bring a change while “in system”. It reminds me of climax remarks in movie Page3 ” You have to be in the system to change system ”

I had ordered the book after reading short interviews with the author during the last days of the Nirbhaya rapists in this world. The interviews had highlighted the career of the author and his experience in conducting judicial hangings/executions.
The book does not offer any thing new on India’s jails other than what has already come out through the main stream media reports. What struck me was the focus on two convicted terrorists Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru. Both of them were found guilty of treason and had been executed at Central Prison, Tihar. The author tries to create an image of holy men out of them and insinuates that death sentence may not have been required here. This gave me a feeling that the book had some political messaging also done, in the guise of a biography.

I havenot read any book by a retired Govt officer write with so much clarity and honesty. That shows the strength of character of a man who had to face corruption and intimidation on almost a daily basis. I had lot of preconceived notions about our jails and the inmates there. Much of that got cganged post reading this book. I also believe in prison reforms and a criminal being given a second chance but Guptaji actually lived it. Kudos to him for that. Mind you it is not easy at all. It really drains you out.
I had read that in religious books ithat everyone has the potential to be good no matter how bad that guy is. I really never reconciled with it. But this book has shown that actually is true.
Sh. Gupta has done a great service by writing this book.
A self conscious jailer’s account

‘Black warrant’ – the Tihar jail stories narrated by ex jailor Sunil Gupta in a span of 32 years (1981-2013) of his service. Brilliantly written in english by a prominent ex NDTV journalist (now in Hindustan Times) Sunetra Choudhury, these stories juxtaposed the incidents of diffrent crimes and non crimes.
Starting from Charles Sobhraj, the international druger of 1970’s to Nirbhaya rapers -all about 8 hangings and many jail breaks -Sunil Gupta’s impartial way of expressing is really laudable and unique too. His self consciousness while witnessing the hangings of Kashmiri revolutionaries Magbhul Bhat and Afjal Guru could enable him to tell the world the loopholes, the conspiracies and the naked truth behind their killings.
Many prominent politicians of previous times did time in jails. It is interesting to note that the once IG of Tihar jail -Kiran Bedi -came back to Tihar as detainee in Anna Hazara movement.
Billa and Ranga -the late 70’s notorious killers of teenagers Geeta Chopra and Sanjay Chopra were hanged in his presence and also Indira Gandhi killers. Sunil Gupta, a graduate of law, didn’t just stop narrating the technicalities and anatomy of their hangings, he also discussed in detail about the court proceedings, confessions and their legalities.
