Great Book, Less so for Oxbridge
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2012

Having had medicine interviews at St. Andrews, Oxford and Birmingham Universities, I would say that this book is a good preparation for a medicine interview.

The book doesn’t give you answers for everything they could ask, but it does allow you to get into the mindset of the interviews. CRUCIALLY, it allows you to THINK about the questions, even if you don’t realise it, being exposed to certain topics will help your brain think about them, so you can discuss them easier if asked at interview. On top of that, it gives you tips on answering, which you can draw upon to flesh out your answers.

Overall, its a great basis, and a worthy investment for any medical interview, IT WILL HELP. Yes, you can go along without reading it, but I would say you might as well read this to give the best chance. The interviewers aren’t looking for you to regurgitate answers, but they are looking for you to be prepared to discuss a wide variety of topics, and this book has a great number of topics that it talk about.

My only criticism is the “Oxbridge” section of the book. Like many books it assumes that it needs an oxbridge section as it would make people worried about oxbridge interviews buy the book. Having read the oxbridge section before my own oxford interview, I would say it wasn’t that helpful, And guides online (from oxford and cambridge universities themselves) are more helpful. It attempted to give examples of questions that could be asked, and how weird and wonderful they could be. Yes, you will get odd questions in an oxford interview, but because of that preparation from a book is unhelpful. Instead, you should be revising key science like maths etc.

Well I got in so it certainly helped!

Honestly the most useful chapters are going to depend on your personality. This book’s message was brilliant – personalisation is KEY. The section on DPT was detailed but you got the gist pretty quickly and that worked immensely well for me – other people might benefit more from later chapters.

I found this book to be more a guide to finding the best method of interview that works for you and helps you find your own signature style which stands you out among the other candidates and gives you an edge. It wasn’t preachy and there were no musts and shoulds, just advice and a warning that, despite all the preparation, you need to be YOU and be natural at the interview and that its highly possible all your preparation might just not be what the medical school is looking for. There’s only one no-no: don’t do something or say something which you don’t really agree with or believe in because THEY WILL KNOW sooner or later – you may be a good actor but honesty is a hallmark of a good (future)doctor, don’t fall at the first hurdle. Be yourself at your best and most thoughtful and you’ll be surprised how the interviewers pick up on it and how well they respond to it (a good response is subjective to interviewer style – some get friendlier and others will challenge the hell out of you to see how far they can bend you – this is a very good sign).

Follow the advice in it by applying it to your life, your work experience, studies, roles etc NOT the other way around. You don’t have to do everything in it either – I skipped most of the chapters.

Got two interviews and both were offers – the book was invaluable in that it at least made me feel like I had more structure and had put more thought into my journey to medical school. Good luck to all you budding medics!
