Dr. Joe
The best stretching book of the lot!
June 24, 2019

I easily like this book the best of a small shelf of stretching books I own. It is written by two men who are well-known professional kinesiologists and know about body mechanics. Their presentation does not present hundreds of exercises, like many other books, but a smaller number that are the best for different regions of the body. For each, they describe and illustrate through helpful graphics which muscles are involved, which are for beginners or more advanced people, and where a certain stretch might be a danger for some, e.g., someone with a sway back. The book has many names of specific muscles with their technical names, but don’t let this deter you. You can go right to the exercise, which is explained simply and clearly in 3 or 4 steps. This book is great for athletes, coaches, and the average person. Learning more about how the body works is a motivating factor for a reader. I worry about the many books out there, giving little more than bare exercises that lead to people doing stretches incorrectly, resulting in harm or people simply giving up.

Perfect illustrations and descriptions

Perfect illustrations and descriptions. At age 82, two falls took their toll. I had seen an earlier edition of this book, and I decided that if I’m ever to walk again I’d better strengthen muscles throughout my body. I found the perfect information for dealing with my developing scoliosis and for the piriformis muscle which causes a lot of hip pain. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a functioning physical body. I have gone from a wheelchair to a walker and now part-time use of a cane. I use this book as a guide for stretching (read that as stimulating) muscles throughout my body, No matter whether I do upper body (neck and back) stretches or hip, leg, or feet stretches, I feel amazing results the next day.

Highly recommended.

This book is outstanding. Each stretch is explained in detail, showing the various muscles stretched(primary and secondary), technique for maximizing the stretch, safety tips, and options for working a stretch from a slightly different “angle.” There are many suggested programs for different “levels”, sports, etc. One huge plus is that they did not leave out beginners, elderly, or deconditioned people. There are are effective stretches for them, so they will not be discouraged, or get themselves hurt. I have practiced yoga and general fitness for a number of years, and found that many of the techniques in this book have been more beneficial, in just the first three weeks of use, than some of the yoga postures – AND safer. I have for the most part stayed out of trouble with the yoga, but have seen others overdo it and damage themselves. Do this stuff in this book, and keep the yoga very simple. If you do yoga, this will help your practice, and you might reconsider the safety and effectiveness of what you have been doing. Thanks to both of the authors for this gem. Highly recommended.

One of my favorites

This is a wonderful introduction to muscle and joint anatomy and stretching. The book gives a detailed account about how various parts of the body work together and how it relates to athleticism and sports injuries. It has a lot of detailed and relevant diagrams regarding anatomy and stretching positions.

The only problem is the book falls apart easily. The nearly all of the pages separated, so I had put the pages in a binder.

Good beginning stretch boook

Would like a larger picture detail of the various stretch areas. The explanations leave some information out but gives the stretch a reasonable detail. The order of presentation is not necessarily an order of the stretching process, but the reader can make their own adjustments. Not a bad publication, just not everything I particularly wanted- my fetish!

So this is an updated version which I like even better
May 24, 2017

My massage therapist turned me on to this years ago and I loaned out my copy. So this is an updated version which I like even better. When some muscle hurts, it is easy to determine which it is and the graphics give explicit instruction on how to stretch it. This is a lifesaver.

Superb for athletes, dancers, physical therapists & fitness professionals!

This book is superb! Diagrams & exercises are are extremely well done. Text does a great job of explaining anatomy & physiology of muscle function. Especially helpful is the table of exercises focused on specific sports like golf. Importantly, it includes dance. I have found this book & diagrams superior to the textbooks I used in medical school for functional purpose. I am using it to facilitate my rehab from rotator cuff surgery & enhance my dance training. My Physical therapy team is ordering a copy for their own use & reference. Highly recommend this book!
