The Authors

Dr. Jonathan P. Vankleunen is an orthopedist in Altoona, Pennsylvania and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital and Tyrone Hospital. He received his medical degree from Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and has been in practice between 11-20 years.

Remember everyone learns differently.
I preferred the Step up to Step 2 more than this one. The book is organized by systems, and the information is presented in the form of cases. Personally, I did not like this strategy, and felt it lacking in some portions, particularly in Peds.

The format is case based and you have to go online to access many of the cases. It is definitely not as comprehensive as I would have liked, compared to First Aid and Master the Boards. It was lacking when it came to preparation for things other than IM, like pediatrics and OB/GYN (you know, the things that you would really need a refresher in if you are an IM resident). Very early on in my board prep I had to switch to something else. BTW, UWORLD, FA, and Master the Boards are an excellent combination.

I am studying for the step 3 and really like this book so far. I have heard everyone say to use master the boards by Kaplan which I also have. Honestly I like this book better. I was a big fan of step up to medicine for step 2 and I plan on passing step 3 here soon in September.

This is a fantastic book which is a thin comprehensive study guide to prepare you for step three. It is Made up of multiple case studies which are similar to what will be seen on your step three exam.

The format of this review book is very unique — it starts with a clinical case, explains it step by step, goes over the differential diagnosis and explains why other choices from the differential are less likely or entirely wrong. I am sure that some people would not find it as appealing and prefer some other ways of studying, but to say that this book is mediocre???!!! The previous reviewer says that there are much better books out there; I personally think that in addition to this one, the truly good review (not question) books are:

Very similar to many of the more standard review products. I did not think it was up to par with the other Step-Up series which are very good. Much better more efficient Step 3 review books out there.
