Dr. Gerszten is the Peter E. Sheptak Professor of Neurological Surgery and director of the Percutaneous Spine Service at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment of spinal tumors and minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Dr. Gerszten is a pioneer in the field of spinal radiosurgery and oversees the instruction of this developing area of neurosurgery for both the American Association of Neurological Surgery and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Gerszten received his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his residency in neurological surgery and a fellowship in spinal surgery at UPMC. He also obtained a master of public health degree from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. He is board-certified in neurological surgery.
Dr. Gerszten serves on the editorial boards of Neurosurgery, The Spine Journal, and the Journal of Radiosurgery, and he is also co-editor of Spine Radiosurgery, the first complete book on the topic.
Dr. Samuel Ryu joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Hospital in April of 2014 as Department Chair and also serves as the Deputy Director for Clinical Affairs for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. He is not only a world-renowned expert in the field of radiosurgery of the brain, but also a recognized pioneer of radiosurgery for the spine and spinal cord tumors and has been instrumental in applying this similar treatment to other various body sites such as lung, pancreas and liver among other organs. Dr. Ryu’s research is focused on preventing and mitigating the toxicity to normal tissues from radiation reaction. He teaches in many educational and training programs throughout the nation. Though he is an active scholar and leader in basic research and clinical trials, Dr. Ryu is a compassionate physician whose primary goal is always the well-being of his patients.
