The Authors

Publishers and publishing houses must stay abreast of these developments and of students’ changing expectations regarding atlases and textbooks they wish to use, as well as ensuring the digital availability of the contents. In addition to interviews with students and systematic surveys, a pub-lisher can sometimes gauge students’ expectations from the textbook market itself. Detailed textbooks claiming to be completely comprehen-sive are increasingly being abandoned in favour of textbooks that di-dactically meet students’ educational needs and cover the contents of their courses and exams — whether they are studying medicine, den-tistry or biomedical science. Likewise, although the images in atlases such as Sobotta have fascinated many generations of doctors and me-dical professionals around the world with their precise naturalistic re-presentations of real dissections, they are sometimes perceived by students as being too complicated and too detailed. This realisation re-quires us to consider how we can build upon the obvious strengths of an atlas — which in the course of over 100 years of tradition and 23 German editions, has become a benchmark of accuracy and quality— to meet modern didactic concepts without the overall work losing its unique, exclusive characteristic and its originality.

 Beautifully illustrated, lovely story

September 1, 2019

It’s 5 am, I’m wide awake, and it’s the first of the month. Kindle First, Prime First… by any other name, it’s a free book – two this month!

Weary of current events, sorrows, politics and such, a children’s book looks like a delightful, refreshing choice. And it is.

With vivid illustrations that show a world away from mine, this was so enjoyable that I read it once and went back to just look at the images again. It shows children – well, and not-so-children – another way of life. Moving with the seasons, travel by boat, and stilted houses.

Yet universal themes shine as well. Friendship, loyalty to pets, risk to save a loved one… And the omnipresent threat of parental consequences. I shudder at the thought.

 Life In The

September 1, 2019

The author, Fernando Vilela, visited the area of the Tapajos River in Brazil, and realized children would be very interested in learning about this part of the world. The book is written for kindergartners to third grade.

It is always fascinating for children and adults to learn about our world, and how others live. In the forest in Brazil, the people live a simple life. They live on the river in a house made of sticks and wood on stilts with a grass/hay roof. They sleep in hammocks. Caua and his sister, Inae are the two young children, the author writes about. He tells us that there are two seasons, summer when it is hot and dry, and winter when it rains, torrents of rain, so much rain, the entire community has to move. They load up a boat, and take all their belongings to a new area where it is dry. Caua and Inae have an adventure, that we learn about, and you will be as surprised as I was.

Fernando Vilela is also the illustrator of the book. His sketches show us the houses along the River Tapajos, the big move, and the adventure of Caua and Inae. They depict the area, so that we have a better vision of the reality of the area, and the lives they lead. This is important so that we have a bird’s eye view of life in the . We have a better understanding of people when we see them, where they live, and how we can relate to their world.
