Attributes of Shapeshifters: On Medicine & Human Change (Wellcome) PDF”

A comprehensive survey of the technology of mapping and its relationship to the battle against disease, this look at medical mapping advances a radical argument that maps are not merely representations of spatial realities but a way of thinking about relations between viral and bacterial communities, human hosts, and the environments in which diseases flourish. The history of medical mapping is traced—from its growth in the 19th century during an era of trade and immigration to its renaissance in the 1990s during a new era of globalization. Referencing maps older than John Snow’s famous cholera maps of London in the mid-19th century, this survey pulls from the plague maps of the 1600s, while addressing current issues concerning the ability of GIS technology to track diseases worldwide. Most of the essays in this book are well-researched and well-written. Many of them have a Scottish flair – not surprising considering the author’s place of residence. Readers of popular medical nonfiction should enjoy this book.

I absolutely adored Adventures in Human Being – it is still my all time favourite book -and I was worried Shapeshifters would struggle to live up to its predecessor. Needless to say I didn’t need to be worried – shapeshifters is yet another deeply touching and beautifully crafted work from Gavin Francis. Would massively recommend to any & all who are interested even slightly in history, philosophy, the human condition and, of course, science & medicine. Can’t go wrong with this as a gift.

He has just the right mixture of fantasy and reality. I was unconsciously waiting my whole life for a book that would explore ideas such as werewolves, witches and horned figures with a grounded medical approach that explains everything in just the right detail for a simpleton like me to understand.
This is a great read.

Fascinating but oddly disappointing

This is a very interesting book. It received several good reviews and the endorsements on the back cover are very impressive.

And, in many ways, I really enjoyed reading the book. The cases are excellent and the reflections fascinating.

But, in the end, it doesn’t add up to the promise of the title “Shapeshifters” and many of the themes are treated in a quite shallow way.

So: disappointing!
