Margaret7 “This book is a superb text for any medical or nursing student aiming to work in the field of sexual and reproductive health – or any allied health professional working in the field. It is an excellent resource that covers all the basics – with both illustrations and photographs – and it is British focused, not American, so all information is relevant and local. Having worked in a family planning clinic in the past I can say with confidence that this is a one of the most user-friendly, clear and approachable overview teaching resources I’ve come across.
The book is divided into four parts: Principles of sexual and reproductive health; Contraception; Sexual health; and Reproductive health. It also comes with a companion website which contains case studies and interactive flash cards to aid self-test learning. Interestingly, the vast majority of photographs of STDs are of penises. Not sure why, but they certainly make the thought of having unsafe sex a very unappetising option.”
Amazamma “I’m not particularly a fan of the ‘At a glance’ series because, in prioritising brevity over depth, they can go too far and become overly superficial. What lets this particular book down right at the start – bearing in mind it covers sexual health – is the lack of representation of female sexual organs. All the book includes are diagrams of the female reproductive system and female external genitalia. The equivalents for men work fine because male genitalia are, of course, external; however, women’s are not.
This is a failure because understanding the anatomy of women’s sexual organs can be of great benefit to a healthy sex life and, if even healthcare professionals specialising in sexual health don’t know about female anatomy, what hope for the rest of us? Marking the clitoris as a dot on a diagram fails to communicate that female sex organs are very much like an internal penis (but smaller). The final chapter is on sexual problems and it’s hard to see how a healthcare professional could help with these without knowing about internal female sexual anatomy. This is a book on sexual health – so why aren’t women’s sexual organs included?
Another criticism is that the diagrams in the book (either male or female) wouldn’t prepare you for the reality of the human body and there is no mention of the sexual health of trans people.
I flicked through the rest of the book and found that, although the broad spread of topics on sexual and reproductive health are covered, it is only with the usual superficiality. If this is what medical students and junior doctors rely on, they are at a disadvantage from the outset.

Book Reader “Well, this is a “Colourful” introduction to Sexual and Reproductive Health. I feel should state that I am not a medical proffessional and as such have little understanding of some of the chapters discussed. But having worked in an industrial chemical laboratory for 35 plus years I can understand a well written text book and this book is well written. The basics are covered as are more in depth discussions.
There is a website that helps as well […] which does feature a selection of cases plus interactive flashcards for self-test. This is a well written soft cover book that really does what it says in that the author gives us visual introduction to aspects of sexual and reproductive health. This takes the reader from basic clinical/doctor/nurse examination skills. Right up to the management of acute Sexually Transmitted Infections and unplanned pregnancy. The use of pictures helps explain problems and there is a good use of diagrams.
This book would suit a student and medical proffessional.
