Strong Woman Sheriff vs. Psychopathic Killer!
September 16, 2020

Even better than Book 1, Melinda Leigh’s storytelling creates a fully developed serial murder procedural, surrounded by well-developed characters with too many bodies and the likelihood of more! Wow!

Newly appointed Sheriff, Bree Taggert, is back with her feisty approach as she struggles to restructure and improve her department, against the resentments and hidden anger of longterm and disgruntled deputies. Who can she trust? Who wants to ensure she fails?

Fortunately, Bree has a few supportive friends and family that add depth and a human touch to the storyline, while a brutal serial killings stalks new victims and those getting in the way. I also enjoyed how the animal personalities played important roles in the story.

Once started, it was hard to put down. Glad I had a personal day to finish this satisfying thriller quickly. The author masterfully builds the plotline around that wake of a killer’s past brutal murders and the list of next victims, only adding to the growing tensions of murders in a small community.

This suspenseful read is made more enjoyable and engaging as we learn to know the many well-defined personalities and their ongoing subplots. The contrast between “normal” life and the tragic killings that Bree must encounter every day adds a believable reality that makes the reading experience worthwhile.

Although this second installment in the series could be read first, or as a standalone read, I’m glad I read it in order because of several overlapping characters and storyline elements.

The Audible narration also was effective and added just enough dramatic flair to enliven the reading even more.

I was not disappointed with this addition, and appreciate more Melinda Leigh’s writing skills in her later well-crafted novels. I definitely will complete this series.

Although this book has significantly fewer foul language issues than earlier works, I hope the author continues to reduce these unnecessary explicatives from future novels because of her stronger narratives and lively dialogues.

Bree and Matt Teamed Up For Christian! 4.75***** Spoiler Alert!
September 21, 2020

Bree Taggert, Sheriff, responding to a closed camp ground distress call for shoots fired, she opened up a can of worms involving a bullied, disintegrating, sociopath with a revenge for pretty, teasing, mean, college boys. Joe C. played by, and used by the manipulative, burglar/con artist, Sara Harper, got his revenge by killing his tormentors and Sara. Bree hired Matt, as an investigator for her stretched PD, and together they located Joe and his new hideout before he committed his fourth and fifth murders. Alyssa’s role, in the home invasions, was heard by Bree, as she too was conned by Sara.

This gravity- defying novel was well edited, and had multidimensional characters one could root for. Bree’s PD managerial skills with Marge’s backing predict an upheaval of this corrupt PD, who’s rough , non – procedural treatment of prisoners is reminescent of our present-day societal issues. Morgan’s representing and freeing Alyssa with Bree and Matt’s assistance is more aligned with proper policing or how it should be done giving alleged suspects a chance to re-enter society, and actual looking for the true criminals. Loved how Matt took Rufus’ rescue into his own hands. If you can be anything in this world, be kind, is the underlying theme of this novel. A promising future for Matt and Bree, and the Taggert kids, plus Dana. A must-read!

Sue’s Reviews
I’m so glad I didn’t stop with Book 1, because Book 2 is much better! Four surprised stars!
January 30, 2021

Well, blow me down with a feather! I gave Cross Your Heart–Book 1 in this series–a lousy one-star review due to sheer boredom, and I expected a similar reaction to Book 2. Boy, was I wrong! Both books have the same main characters (except for the villains), but this one has a clever, suspense-filled plot with plenty of twists and turns to speed things along from beginning to end.

Our heroine (Bree Taggert) is now the county sheriff, and our hero (Matt Flynn) works as her investigator. Bree is still dealing with the aftermath of her sister’s murder two months earlier, trying to raise her sister’s two kids while dealing with the demands of her new job. Matt would like to start a romantic relationship with Bree, but she can’t spare the time–especially when dead bodies start floating to the surface of a partially frozen lake. The male victims have not only been shot; their faces have been “pulverized into a mess of broken bones and ragged flesh” in an act of unbridled rage.

A serial killer is on the loose in Randolph County, and he (or she) must be stopped, but the perpetrator’s identity remains a mystery despite our team’s best criminal investigation techniques. (Kudos to the author for sharing her knowledge of these techniques and procedures.) The killer could also be connected to a series of residential burglaries, but how? Clues and suspects keep our intrepid team of investigators–and the reader–guessing.

As in Book 1, the author devotes several intermittent chapters to the killer’s thoughts and actions. These revealing glimpses into the twisted workings of a mind driven mad with jealousy are especially chilling. But the perpetrator isn’t brilliant–they seldom are. Why dump three bodies into a shallow lake so close to home? Dead bodies don’t stay submerged for more than a few days, even in cold water. And for Pete’s sake, when given a perfect chance to shoot Sheriff Taggert at the lake, why does the killer just pick up the gun and stagger away? So dumb!

The final confrontation with the killer is a suspenseful, realistic nail-biter that kept me on my toes throughout. (Literally. I read the final chapters standing up. Shows how bored I wasn’t this time!) Anyway, I’ll skip the details, because I don’t want to spoil a thing.

I do have a couple of complaints. In my opinion, Alyssa gets off the hook far too easily. If only she’d been more honest in the beginning . . . but then we wouldn’t have a book to read, would we? And doggone it, I sure would like to see a romance develop between Bree and Matt. The poor guy does everything he can to help her, and what does he get for his efforts? Just the hint of a kiss at the very end. Please, Ms. Leigh! We need something more than that, and so does Matt.

Finally, a HUGE thank you to Matt for rescuing Rufus (my favorite part of the whole book), and for finding a perfect new career for smart Greta. I do hope Bree overcomes her fear of dogs.

Really enjoyed “going back “
September 17, 2020

To Upstate NY. It’s been awhile since I read one of Melinda Leigh’s books-like most prolific best selling authors she became formulary to me and I could predict the ending. This is the second book in the series and after a 4 month hiatus the time was right. I didn’t want to stop and the ending was a surprise.
