Scriptwriting tools for TV found here
March 11, 2021

I’ve written a few screenplays and know enough about the business to understand the market has changed. Online streaming movie and TV subscription services (like and HBO and Apple etc) need more content and they want series ideas and writers. This book offers the tools I need to be successful at writing for TV. Today I finally (and with lots of anticipation) received my copy and read Save the Cat! Writes for TV by Jamie Nash from beginning to end. I will do so again and bookmark the places I need to reference later, like I’ve done with other Save the Cat books. I know Jamie’s a successful screenwriter so it’s from someone who works in the business, which is important to me. I want current relevant thoughts and ideas to help me be successful. I think it’s also interesting that there is precedence for Jamie writing this book. Blake Snyder mentioned and thanked Jamie in one of his own screenwriting books before he passed. Jamie’s new book includes Save the Cat principles but takes it a step further with what he’s learned from being in the business.

A memorable, thoughtful, and insightful book on television writing…
August 15, 2021

Such a truly valuable and informative read. The author does a great job of showcasing the skills and work that goes into television writing but incorporating his own unique voice and wit into the writing to make the reader feel connected to the information they are absorbing.

However, what really stands out is the information that the author bestows upon the readers, building upon the legacy of Blake Snyder’s work with an insight into modern-day television in the age of streaming services. The breakdown of the book into four sections of television writing, and focusing on building oneself up from a member of the writer’s room to a showrunner was a great foundation to lay for this book, and the educational yet relatable way the author writes to his audience really allowed this information to be absorbed greatly. I, as a writer, definitely felt the expertise that went into this book.

A memorable, thoughtful, and insightful book on television writing, author Jamie Nash’s “Save the Cat! Writes for TV” is a must-have book for any aspiring and established writers out there. While the book’s primary focus on television writing is truly amazing, I feel, as an author myself, that this book can easily translate and apply to all formats of writing, especially for those hoping to craft memorable, long-last series or arcs for multiple books, something I know I could use. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

Excellent Resource

I was hesitant to read Save the Cat because it always came off as gimicky to me, but Snyder’s breakdown of beats and notecards are some of the most helpful tools I’ve found in breaking my stories. I wasn’t sure whether I’d need “for TV” since I have Save the Cat and Strikes Back… but I’m so glad I purchased it since I am specifically working on scripts for television. The extra information on pitching and formatting beats for 60min or 30min has been great as well as being able read the breakdowns from current shows. If you are *only* working on tv scripts, I think you could skip Save the Cat and just get this – it has all the information from that book but geared for tv.

Informative, Clear, and Friendly

I read this book in two sittings, only interrupted by needing to sleep (annoying). The tone it’s written in is so friendly, it feels like being given advice by a trusted teacher or wise friend. It delivers honesty while never being arrogant or patronizing. I got out my highlighter and every page now has neon yellow sections that I know I will come back to again and again.
Television has so many options in how it handles its pilots, seasons, and arcs – but it was all well explained to be clearer than I thought possible. The book focuses of course on the idea, planning, and outlining stage of writing. But if you follow this recipe, you’ll have a really well-thought-out script by the end. The various series the author chose to break down were perfect and gave a well-rounded view of the TV landscape.
It’s up to date for the streaming world, has great information about pitching, and will make you excited about your work!
While I wish I had this book a few years earlier during the start of my screenwriting journey, I’m so glad to have it now! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and friendly advice.

Solid guidance and examples from a wonderful writer
April 4, 2021

Full disclosure, Jamie is a friend of mine. That does not take away from the fact that he is a seasoned writer and gifted instructor.

I’ve read a lot of TV and screenwriting books. A LOT of books.

I already have a decent understanding of structure, story, theme. I’ve written a lot of scripts, especially shorts. But I’ve been struggling with my comedy pilot for quite some time. Jamie’s guidance using the STC model was really helpful. The breakdowns of so many shows, including some very current one, really helped me dive deep into my own. I identified the missing elements and finished my outline.

With the help of a consultant, my writers group, and especially this book, I got straight back to my pilot, which will be ready for a table read in a few weeks.

I highly recommend this book!

Please do something about the italic and bold font type (Kindle)
March 30, 2021

I only just received this on my Kindle, but something seems to be off with the type-setting: italic and bold fonts are annoyingly small compared to the normal font. I’d be grateful if the publisher could change this. Changing font types doesn’t solve the issue, changing font size does somewhat, but then it blows up the regular font type as well, which isn’t what I want

Genuinely exhilarating

Blake Snyder’s original Save the Cat is a classic – and here, Jamie Nash takes it a stage further, and applies it to the wonky world of writing for TV. He writes about genres, and formats, and structures, and everything else, but what makes it such a good book is that (a) he gives plenty of illustrative examples, and (b) – especially (b) – it is so darn well written. It’s highly accessible. I could immediately see how the points he makes apply not just in general terms, but to my own specific cases. The result? I have been able to make my story outlines better, to the extent that I’m genuinely excited about my work. Jamie – if you’re reading this, I owe you a beer. In fact, probably several. Thanks!

Sehr gutes Buch über die Strukturierung einer TV-Serie
Reviewed in Germany on January 13, 2022

I found this book interesting and very useful. I’ve sold 15 scripts over the years but I firmly believe that I can always improve my craft. This is another in the Blake Snyder inspired Save the Cat series. Worthwhile for tv writers with great examples and solid advice.

This is one of the best screenwriting books I have read. While it is meant for TV writers, film writers too can benefit from it. Frankly, this is one book that I plan to keep referring to for every screenwriting project.
