There are nice kidney-friendly recipes
January 11, 2018

This is a very well intentioned book to give those newly diagnosed with renal disease nutritional information to help them understand what they should and should not eat.

There are nice kidney-friendly recipes. I can only give three stars because of a major failing — what is the portion size for the very differing recipes. Some are for one or two servings. Others are multiple servings. Although suggested portion sizes for some foods are given in the first part of the book, determining how many portions/services each recipe makes is not at all clear and makes the reader guess in nearly every case.

I have messaged the publisher via facebook with a request that they send me a list of portions/servings for each recipe. I will post here if they respond with useful information.

Confusing, frustrating
May 2, 2019

This is by far the most frustrating, confusing, and only mildly helpful book on the subject. The recipes require a trip to specialty markets in a big city. The font on the lists of food is so small you need a magnifying glass along with readers… And what exactly is a 1.8g of the listed food? But more importantly, after studying the entire book three times, you come to the conclusion you must hire a dietitian, which she suggests in every other sentence. Oh, she IS a dietitian. Why did I buy the book? It’s certainly not an easy reference and she contradicts herself multiple times. May I eat spinach or not?

Great resource for those with CKD
June 9, 2018

This book is an excellent resource for newly diagnosed CKD patients. I was already following a paleo diet and avoiding processed foods, but I wasn’t sure if there were certain veggies or proteins I should be limiting based on my CKD. This book includes lists of foods that are high in potassium, phosphorus and sodium which CKD patients need to be mindful of in meal planning. The author includes weekly meal plans with corresponding shopping lists, as well as recipes. There is also a section on reading food labels. A must read for those wanting to adopt a healthier lifestyle and better manage their CKD through diet.
