He received the 1998 “Bioneers Award” from The Collective Heritage Institute, and the 1999 “Founder of a New Northwest Award” from the Pacific Rim Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils.

He has written five books on mushroom cultivation, use and identification; his books Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms and The Mushroom Cultivator (coauthor) have long been hailed as the definitive texts of mushroom cultivation. E. Copper “This is THE psilocybe book. The major and minor psilocybe genera are not uncommon in parts of the U.S., but most mushroom field guides seem to gloss over or not even include them. Whether hunting for edibles, or looking for psilocybes in particular, it is a good idea to know what you are collecting. This book does a good job filling in some of the missing information from other field guides. The first half of the book is also filled with historical and entheogenic information that is a good read for the curious mind. I take it with me when foraging so I don’t end up accidentally tripping, and I have some good reading while taking a break.”

kiddiefondue “A wealth of information and insight from author Paul Stamets. Along with identification and biological information on mushrooms, he includes personal history and stories that are fascinating to read. The history of the mushroom in different cultures and religions along with the resurgence of psilocybin use in the 60s and to more current times is very interesting to read and ponder. This is a fascinating read even if you don’t collect spores, molds, and fungi like Egon.

I will say that my disappointment so far lies in there not being a really user friendly guide to hunting the different species of mushrooms. I really wanted something that would give me a state or region and then show pictures and descriptions and where they usually grow (tree trunk, under bushes, etc.) and also possible seasonality of when the best times are to look for them by region. I’m not sure if this has been compiled by anyone yet because I’ve been looking and haven’t found one yet that includes everything I want. This is a book I would buy again, even though it was missing that information that I was hoping for.”

Juan Camilo Rodriguez Martinez “Its the second time i buy this buy… It arrived today and im so happy… I lost my other copy last month on
a camping but i can say this book is pure quality… It resisted the rain the campin handling and all that stuff…
The binding of the book is well done… I definitively would buy this book a third time if i need so… Im a very happy
curious person and i love to travel and camping and sometimes i loose things but thats ok,…. With a smile i remember
my last adventures with this book and i know the ones to come will be the best… Stamets work is great and handful…
Colorful… Lovely… Nice Photos… Good Information for the mushroom enthusiasts out there…
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the matter…

Lots of facts… I was surprised of the little i know around the subject of psilocybin mushrooms!!!
Data and comments around many species and many lessons for all the mushroom hunters out
there…”

I R Bones “great book but still not quite the great identifier i was looking for. we need a book with plenty/multiple photos of each mushroom that grows in Britain and Northern Europe. Someday someone will put one of these together because the psilocybin mushrooms of the british isles old book is useless unless you want to identify P Semincealata, which, come on, most people who would be interested in such a book, already know how to identify. i don’t think Stamets book is even good enough to safely identify wavy caps (and there are a few more types that grow in Britain. they are a little rarer, contain a bit less active alkaloids but they’re there for utilisation).”
Sinbad “This book should be the prize possesion of anybody interested in shrooms. It is well written, has lots of pictures, and the quality and layout of the book are very high. This book lists, describes and pictures pretty much every psilocybin mushroom currently know to man, and is an invaluble reference guide.
As somebody has already mentioned, the only slight down fall of the book is that some of the photographs are a little small, but considering the sheer number of photographs in the book, maybe they have to be small to fit them all in.
The book also contains tips on taking mushrooms, and information on the levels of psychoactive compounds contained within the various species.
I was amazed at the number of speices of psilocybin mushrooms that can be found in the UK, as very few “normal” mushroom field guides ever mention them.
I highly recomend this publication to anybody with an interest in magic mushrooms.”
