The Authors
Dr. Beth Black, associate professor, has been funded by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institutional K12 Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Program, an R21 from NINR and a grant from the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association’s Lesbian Health Fund to explore various aspects of pregnancy loss, perinatal palliative care, care choices related to pregnancy in the presence of a life-limiting fetal diagnosis and reproductive loss in lesbian couples. She is currently analyzing data from her ethnography End of Life Care after Severe Fetal Diagnosis (R21) and the Reproductive Loss in Lesbian Couples study.
In 2015, Dr. Black published Perinatal and Pediatric Bereavement for Nursing and Other Health Professionals (Black, Wright & Limbo, Springer Press), which provides a theoretical basis for care of bereaved parents and children in various situations including pregnancy loss, traumatic death, and sibling suicide.
Dr. Black has been instrumental in the implementation of a pediatric palliative and end of life care service at a large not-for-profit hospice and palliative care organization. Her current interests include loss, grief and bereavement in childbearing settings; advance planning in the presence of severe fetal defects; and quality indicators in perinatal palliative care. Dr. Black is not taking new doctoral students at this time.
