Reviews From Customers

1325 “This comes as two books – the “Text” and a workbook, which follows along with the text but gives practice at prescribing without having to flip between lots of pages. This particular book is focused on hospital based prescribing, ideal for an MD on call kind of situation.
There’s a section for acute care, which is ER type situations, such as a patient with left lower quadrant pain, diagnosed with likely perforated diverticulitis, and in need of pain management. The second section is in house in the hospital, which includes things like anticoagulation issues or new onset of sepsis in an already admitted patient. The final section goes through more routine inpatient things, like reviewing medications before discharge.

The text portion first presents the scenarios, with the workbook having the space for writing out what you would prescribe. Once you’re through each grouping of scenarios, the explanations are in the main text, which go into great detail on the why’s of everything, along with the answers for how your written out drug charts should look. This book covers a very wide range of situations, and is a wonderful resource and refresher tool for any physician who has to prescribe things in new to them patients in a hospital setting. In the beginning of the book is also a great reference list of abbreviations, and an appendix that goes very briefly over antibiotic guidelines, as well as a summary of the case studies.

Overall, this is a wonderful tool, and certainly a great way for seasoned physicians to test their skills while also being an incredibly valuable source for residents. This also comes at a great price, and I especially like that the workbook is separate, making it easy to see the details of each case while also formulating your answers.”

A Mom “Wiley is an excellent British publisher with a long history of producing useful and significant medical texts.

This particular book is meant to be used by medical students as a diagnostic and prescribing practice. After the introductory chapter the reader is given 50 simulated patient scenarios. These case studies are divided by clinical setting: acute take, on call at the hospital, and ‘routine or specialty inpatient review’.

The authors refer to British National Formulary for guidance, and they admit that there isn’t one solution and to assist the student they set out their explanations in two parts. The first is what to consider ‘when deciding what to prescribe, and how to actually write the prescription.

The accompanying workbook has simulated Prescription sheets.

SUMMARY
I found this set to be well thought out, with the solutions being well described. For example, #7 is a 27 yo woman with suspected bacterial meningitis. The authors urge the ‘physician’ to administer drugs as soon as the disease is suspected. They remind the reader what the common bacteria are that might cause this disease and what to administer until the precise variant is named.

They then go on to outline other treatments that might be considered, as well as how to relieve symptoms. A low level of heparin, for example, might be prescribed to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolism. The authors then go on to discuss how precisely the prescriptions should be written.

The examples have a wide range of patients. Two are babies and one is a 104 year old woman. Teens are entirely overlooked and all but one involves non-accidents.”
