The Writers

Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.

While taking a class in human anatomy at San Francisco City College, he discovered a way to effectively learn the subject by coloring in drawings, diagrams and names. The teacher of the course, Lawrence Elson, Ph.D. agreed to help him produce a coloring book. Elson wrote and Kapit designed and illustrated The Anatomy Coloring Book, which was published in 1977 and has been a widely-translated bestseller ever since. The Physiology Coloring Book was published in 1987, with the assistance of two professors from Berkeley: Robert Macey and Esmail Meisami. The Geography Coloring Book was published in 1991; Kapit drew the maps and wrote the text. The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in a second edition in 1993, and second editions of Geography and Physiology Coloring Books will be published in 1997.

Robert Macey is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a Professor of Physiology and Chair of the Department of Physiology-Anatomy at Berkeley. Dr. Macey has written extensive research articles and reviews on membrane transport as well as a successful text on human physiology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Esmail Meisami is a professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Illinois. He has authored and edited books on biology, physiology, human growth and development, and developmental neurobiology and has written numerous research papers on sensory systems and hormones in brain development. He received his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Good for explanation of AP

Got this to keep my anatomy and physiology class fresh. I have the anatomy (the first coloring book) as well this one is physiology and more in detail how everything works.

Some of the reviews stated the pages were too thin and when used fine tip markers it bled through. I turned the page, and as you can see no bleed through. But definitely recommend fine tip markers because some lines are pretty thin and coloring pencils may not get it right.

Nice book with a cool concept
November 18, 2016

Ordered on my Prime account and arrived one day early. Nice book with a cool concept. Its not like a typical anatomy or physiology coloring book that your probably thinking about. This is an intro level text book. However, rather than the typical text reference to a picture, this book is written with instructions for the student to color the diagrams themselves to reinforce the learning. Also, the diagrams aren’t the typical diagrams that you see in text books. These pictures and diagrams are drawn specifically for the text. For example, as the text is describing something like the Flight or Fight response, the student is coloring a picture per text instruction showing the whole response including the endocrine system along with the autonomic nervous system. And the drawing instructions included in the text have you color it in a beginning to end fashion of the response cycle. I think its a pretty cool book. It is an intro level text however. So if your an advanced student in premed or something like that, its probably to basic for you.

A must have for visual learners

In NP school, it helped me really understand how the cells and organs work at the metabolic level, and decreased my anxiety . This provides a massive amt. of information. I started coloring a page a day when I started in the program. Explanations on the opposite page give clear concise information. I really enjoyed learning this way. If you wait until you are in Patho it may be too much information to process quickly. I found using colored pens worked best. The pages are thin and the things you color can be very tiny.

This is a great idea

I gave this to my daughter in law who is working on her nursing degree. She loves it and my son said he may color it again when she finishes school. She thinks it will be a good study aid for her. I agree as it provided another way to encode information in memory. One may not recall a written definition but may remember the location, function, etc from coloring. I would have gladly tried a new way to study in college and graduate school. Even if this didn’t work, it couldn’t hurt and I would have had some fun. I’m looking forward to hearing if it was actually a learning tool. Overall a great idea in my opinion.
