Not finished reading, but…

I wanted to give this book a review as there were none when looked I through the First Reads options for May 2022. A third of the way in I can say that the writing is well-balanced and the author is a good story teller. It would be an easy thing to allow the emotional rawness the author still feels from her childhood to overwhelm the story. Ms. Chisholm does not take that road. I’m grateful I took a chance on this selection. It’s one of the true, interesting discoveries I’ve come across in the First Reads program. Thank you!

A Black Girl Unprotected by Muslim Mother’s misguided loyalty

This is a memoir about a Black woman’s account of her mother’s choice to become a Muslim and how that community and upbringing impacted her. I had to constantly remind myself that this is a memoir. At times, I wanted her to go into further details about some of the stuff she brings up but it may be that she does not have those details since they involve other people. This book starts off like it’s about someone who was apart of a cult–unwillingly; it is more than that. The Black Muslim community definitely shaped who Chisholm is but her relationship with her mother and her mostly absent father had profound affects as well. I also would attribute journalism to her effective way of storytelling. I flew through this story, thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it. I enjoyed this book and if I had one gripe it would be that it was too short.

Not what I expected

I ordered this book on a whim, I was looking for something to read but wasn’t super expectant of what I wanted to read. I literally read the description, saw the word “cult” and was like “oh its going to talk about the viewpoint of a culture from one it’s attendees.” It’s so much more than that. It goes into so much depth about the inequalities that Black Muslims go through and how a cult leader was able to appeal to them on a promise of better place. It helped me understand more of what they go through currently as a person who isn’t one or the other. It opened my eyes to crisis I was aware of but wasn’t sure of the specifics. It was a beautiful piece of writing and I’m glad I decided to read it on a whim. It has helped to broaden my own perspective on things and I hope she continues to write things that can do that.
