The Writers

RIC BURNS is a documentary filmmaker best known for directing the award-winning PBS series New York, which he wrote with James Sanders. He is also known for his work on The Civil War, which he produced with his brother, Ken. Since 1990, he has directed nearly fifty hours of prime-time programming for PBS, and the films have received seven Emmy Awards, three Alfred I. duPont–Columbia University Awards, and two Peabody Awards, among others.

JAMES SANDERS is an architect, author, and filmmaker, who, with Ric Burns, wrote the acclaimed eight-part PBS series New York. His landmark study of the city and film, Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies, won a Theatre Library Association Award. He has written for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Vanity Fair, and has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Emmy Award.

LISA ADES is a documentary filmmaker who has produced and directed films for PBS and cable television for thirty years. Her acclaimed film Miss America premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before its broadcast on PBS in 2002. She has also produced award-winning films with Ric Burns, including the first five episodes of New York.

Bought this for a Sociology class. Cheaper than the college bookstore, easier than the library and no worries about return dates. A companion to the Burns NYC documentary series, and a great reference that saved hours of reviewing videos over and over.

This is WAY too heavy! It should have been published in two volumes. I loved the video series, and I’m sure I’d love this book if I could stand to hold it for more than two minutes.

This takes a while to get through, but just about EVERYTHING in it is interesting. As a NY native it’s interesting to find out how all the things I see and hear about every day came into existence and changed over the years. It really is the greatest city and state on the planet.

I purchased this book as a xmas gift for a friend, now I have to find one for myself it’s that great! Wonderful pictures and photos, as well as historical information and it’s a HUGE coffee table sized book. Highly, highly recommend!

A very well written and interesting History of the Development of New York throughout the ages. Some great pictures as well. Highly recommended (if rather heavy!!)

We have bought this for our son for Christmas. It seems very informative with lots of photos. We read the reviews and were not disappointed. In fact it’s better than we thought it would be, we’re sure our son will be pleased with this as he loves New York and is interested in its history. The book arrived promptly and well packaged.

A must read for all New York City aficionados. Wherever your interest in the city lies, this book provides the foundations and stepping stones to develop it further. It provides fascinating insights and as such us a must read. Excellent value for money.

A really interesting look at how New York has grown from a useful harbour in the 17th century to such a huge global presence. Brilliant pictures, lots of good quotes and sources and a really good story to back it up.
