The Authors
Dr. Ohtsura Niwa has served as Chairman at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) since June 2015. He studied zoology for undergraduate and radiation biology for graduate education. After moving to US, he worked on radiation induced leukemia in mice and its causative agent of endogenous retrovirus in mice. He was then focusing on the mechanisms of gene silencing of retrovirus in embryonal stem cells and its activation by radiation. Since such events took place in an untargeted fashion at very high frequency after irradiation, he started working on untargeted mutations in F1 mice born to irradiated spermatozoa, using minisatellite and pink-eyed unstable loci as markers. Through such studies it became clear that mutation mediated by homologous recombination can be induced in an untargeted fashion as an event of damage responses to irradiation throughout embryonic and fetal development in mice. Because of his heavy involvement in radiation biology, he was invited by ICRP to become a C1 member through which he had a chance to work with Fukushima people after the accident in 2011.

Purchased new and overall it’s great! My only complaint is that the spine of the book has a little bit of noticeable wear and tear even though I bought it new, but other than that no complaints because it serves its purpose and it could be worse.
