Joanna Gaines and her husband, Chip Gaines, are co-founders and co-owners of Magnolia Homes, Magnolia Market and Magnolia Realty in Waco, Texas. Together, they also host HGTV’s Fixer Upper, where Joanna serves as the lead designer and Chip handles construction. Joanna appreciates the old ways of living, simple and hard-working with home at the center of it all.
Joanna, also known by friends and fans as “Jo” or “JoJo”, was born in Kansas and raised in the Lone Star State. She graduated from Baylor University with a degree in Communications and was inspired to join the world of design while interning in New York City. Joanna decided to open a home decor shop, Magnolia Market, in 2003; bringing her NYC-inspired ideas and eye for design back to Waco, Texas. She soon discovered this passion complemented Chip’s construction experience, and together they began remodeling and flipping homes.
Recently Chip and Joanna partnered to write their autobiography: The Magnolia Story. The Magnolia Story details their life together; from how they met and their first home renovation projects, to how they came to have their own TV show and much more.
In between filming for Fixer Upper, their home renovation projects, and managing the Magnolia businesses, Joanna enjoys life on their farm, writing for her blog and spending time cooking family recipes in her kitchen. Gardening soothes her soul and being with her four kids dominates all other favorites.

Inspiring Gift for the Women and Girls in my life!

This book packs a wallop. My God I was moved to tears by these women’s stories, and so incredibly inspired by their resilience!!!! I am a school teacher and will be giving this to my female students (and possibly my male students as well to educate them about female empowerment and boundaries!). Loved the mix of trailblazers like Gloria Steinem and Billy Jean King, and unknown women as well. I am already thinking about my own “moment” and may make this an exercise for the girls in my class. Also I want to ask their mothers and caregivers! I love this special, powerful, uplifting book.

A Great Cross Section

Originally bought this to give to a middle schooler. Decided to read it first. I am glad I did. A couple of the narratives may be a little raw for her. Will discuss it with her mom first. Would have no problem gifting a high schooler. This would make a great graduation gift. I thoroughly enjoyed these narratives from a really good cross-section of women ranging from the unknown to known. These are vignettes from each answering the question, “What was the moment in your life when you realized you were ready to fight for yourself?” The responses are eye opening and thought provoking.
