The Gold Standard dictionary is now almost unusable
February 8, 2019

This dictionary is the gold standard for editors and writers. I’m giving it only two stars, because it’s now almost unusable.

The font size is too small for anybody over the age of 40. Also, the paper is so thin that too much of the other side of the page shows through. The text is borderline unreadable because of these issues.

Also, my copy was kind of shabby. It was shrink wrapped, but the dust jacket is severely torn. Also, about 20 pages were folded over by half an inch. That’s a manufacturing defect that they should have caught.

I have to use this dictionary, because it’s required for my job. For the rest of you, I recommend choosing an alternative with larger type and thicker paper. There are several well-respected alternatives to Merriam-Webster.

A really fantastic, helpful and gorgeous collegiate dictionary!
August 3, 2018

As a native Chinese who has never lived in an English-speaking country, this dictionary, though still a bit tough for me, is fantastic and enormously helpful for my English study. I am a graduate student now and have learned English as a second language for almost 15 years. Unfortunately, however, the English training I have received these years is not only boring, but also troublesomely unbalanced. It largely serves the aim of passing the exams held by Chinese education ministrative authority, thus making our Chinese learned a set of Chinese type English named as “Chinglish”, which is characterized by an abundance of oddly ingenuine usages of words, phrases and sentences. I have gradually realized this matter and been dying for tasting the relish of genuine English, especially American English. Therefore, until one day I saw a highly recommended comment at Quora, about what a Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary could do for you, I just realized this dictionary is what I need. I was deeply fascinated by it at the moment I got it and saw its gorgeous cover, decent printing and rich items. After that, I almost opened it every day and spent quite much time reading it. It is proved to be the best and most helpful dictionary with most genuine American usage, and I can not help myself loving it!!! That is why I scored it as five stars.

Be aware — hard to read, tiny print, crowded entries
January 20, 2020

Bought this dictionary because our language is rapidly evolving and I am a copy editor. I still like using my style guides and dictionaries in print, along with the digital versions — different mediums for different purposes. When this dictionary arrived, I was pretty happy to see it — until I opened it. The print is extremely small and the entries are crowded on the page. With or without my strongest reading glasses, it proved to be unreadable, at least for me. Very disappointing, but I will need to return it. (My new edition of The Chicago Manual of Style is perfectly readable, as always. It’s not just me.) Will look for my next dictionary in the bookstore, where I can check before buying.

False definition of troll, and other quality control issues
February 29, 2020

I agree with reviewers who complained about page thickness. I have books that are much thicker, so there’s no need for pages so thin that the text on the other side is distractingly noticeable. A work of such significance and ubiquity deserves better presentation. Also, the indices along the side don’t match the beginnings of entries for the specified letters. Flaw or feature? There’s also poor quality control: about 20 pages near the back are joined and perforated along the top. I was able to separate them, but can still see remnants of the perforations. Other than that, I’m pleased with the familiar style.

I was drawn to the word “troll” by the large sticker on the shrink wrap which loudly promotes the new entries. Their definition of troll is false at worst, incomplete at best. I understand that dictionaries define words as they’re commonly used, but to completely omit the original and still commonly used definition is malpractice and inconceivable for such a vital reference. The definition offered by M-W is a misappropriation propagated by mass media and on social media, and boils down to quipping. “Vitriol” and “harassing” are the exact opposite of trolling. Even “antagonizing” doesn’t capture the essence of trolling.

The hallmarks of actual trolling are 1) people passionately argue with each other, not with the troll, 2) they don’t realize that what sparked their conflict was a troll, and 3) the troll offers minimal to no engagement beyond the initial statement.

A definition of troll that’s faithful to its original usage would be: a statement or question that is moot, but that sparks protracted and increasingly heated arguments among those who read it. A recent example of trolling is the whistleblower complaint about President Donald Trump’s July 25, 2019 phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. The complaint ultimately led to Democrats impeaching Trump for “soliciting interference of a foreign government, Ukraine… to publicly announce investigations that would… harm the election prospects of a political opponent” -Article 1. This is a moot charge considering the same foreign country, in coordination with a Democrat Party operative, investigating Trump’s 2016 campaign manager and publicly announcing their investigation was merely “research” according to Democrats at the time. By simply changing the characterization of foreign-sourced information from “research” to “interference,” the whistleblower successfully spawned mass turmoil over mundane activity.
