Fantastic book for helping your child adapt to the idea of kindergarten!
July 1, 2020

Although this story would be great to read with any soon-to-be-kindergartener, it is especially well-suited for little ones with sensory challenges, social anxiety, or similar struggles. This book perfectly addresses many things that may be difficult for your kiddo when first starting kindergarten, and it explains with understandable language what the kitten, Clover, is feeling in each situation. Clover is overwhelmed, so her mom lets her stay home for a few days until she feels ready to try again, and then Clover finds ways to adapt to the sights, sounds, feelings, and interactions of kindergarten. Not only could this book help your kiddo to see and express themselves in a positive, adorable character, but it also offers a realistic blueprint for how to overcome these common challenges. The illustrations are also quite beautiful and appealing to my kids. An excellent book all around!

Disappointed at the focus on the child’s bad experience
July 19, 2020

Bought this to read with/to my 5 year-old grandson, who is about to start kindergarten in the midst of so many uncertainties about school. I was surprised that most pages were about the negative experience that Clover had, the fear, disappointment, and sense of separation. Things didn’t turn around until the last few pages because of the connection with Oliver. Only two pages were devoted to Clover actually enjoying Kindergarten. I wasn’t sure I wanted to plant all the things that might go wrong at a new kindergarten in my grandson’s head, which will be a new adventure.. Wondered if the book is aimed at children on the autism spectrum for whom being touched might be upsetting. The acknowledgement of what would be troubling to such a child might be a very good emphasis for a family wanting to encourage their child.

For me, I decided to wait until fall school rolls out whatever way it does, and to make up a story to go along with the pictures, which are nicely done. An advantage of reading to a 5 year-old!

Heartwarming Tale

This is a sweet, beautifully illustrated story about a little kitty with sensory issues who is starting kindergarten. It does a great job of showing us kindergarten through her eyes – loud, bright, and scary!

But it also ends on an encouraging note: when Clover adopts some strategies (dark glasses, ear muffs and a special blanket) for coping with all those challenges, the other kitties welcomed her back and are completely accepting of her different ways.

Starting School Worries
August 15, 2020

Laura Purdie Salas has written a special story that is not one of her usual marvelous poetry books, but one just right for young ones heading to school for the first time. I imagine Laura did not expect that the book would be out when schools struggle about the opening because of the pandemic. Nevertheless, it’s a book that will especially help for any child with sensory issues, one who prefers a quiet room mostly alone.
Clover Kitty loves her life, perhaps thinks a friend would be nice sometimes, but mostly, she’s satisfied. Then her mother announces that the next day is the first day in kittygarden and off she goes. It’s not a good day with classmates getting so close, a teacher who uses a very loud gong, and naptime with a scratchy mat. The next day Clover decides to stay home and her mother lets her take time to figure out how things can be better. A new friend, Oliver, helps, too, so Clover goes off again, with new plans to enjoy her days, like earmuffs for that twangy gong! For parents and children with sensory issues, this can be a good book to read together and, like Clover, make plans that help with those school challenges. Hiroe Nikata’s illustrations of cute “cat” students show all the emotions from sad to frustrating to happy!
