Dr. Christopher VandenBussche is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He serves as the Associate Director of Cytopathology as well as the Program Director for the Cytopathology Fellowship.
Dr. VandenBussche’s research focuses on genitourinary and gynecologic cytopathology. He investigates molecular methods and digital image analysis techniques that may contribute to the earlier detection and treatment of cancer. His clinical research involves the international standardization of reporting in cytologic specimens. He led the pelvic washings subgroup of The International System for ing Serous Fluid Cytopathology as well as two subgroups for The Paris System for ing Urinary Cytology, including the subgroup on upper tract urothelial cancer.

Beautiful high quality cytopath images plus high yield bullet point text

This is a beautifully done cytopathology textbook/atlas/guide by Mody, Thrall, and Krishnamurthy. The images throughout the entire book are stunning. Brilliant hues, crisp resolution, and perfect white balancing. The figures have helpful arrows that point out the key findings without being obtrusive or obscuring the details of the perfect images. Photos of gross specimens and histologic sections are provided for correlation with the cytopath for many entities. The text is formatted as high yield bullet points with sections on differential diagnosis, pitfalls, reporting terminology, and other useful tips and tricks. The book is comprehensive, including chapters on all of the major organ systems. Updates in this 2nd edition of the book include Milan salivary and Paris urinary reporting systems, as well as updates to thyroid and cervicovaginal Bethesda.
The book also delves into lymphomas and even explores more esoteric niche areas of cytopathology such as ophthalmic, brain/CSF, bone and soft tissue tumors, and even skin lesions. There are several sections that go beyond the usual “microscopic photo/descriptive text” format that is the foundation of most anatomic pathology textbooks. A section on ultrasound-guided thyroid FNA techniques shows images of neck anatomy with corresponding Doppler ultrasound images, explains radiology terms like “posterior shadowing” and “comet tail artifact”, and discusses various techniques for obtaining an adequate sample. There is even a section on cytopreparatory techniques, lab troubleshooting, and other aspects of lab quality management. The authors seem to have thought of everything with this book, and most importantly, they clearly made image quality a top priority. That obvious extra effort paid off splendidly in the finished product. This book will be very useful to have right next to your microscope, but it would also be a nice addition to any coffee table.

Great, but needs an e-book too

Would be great to see a Kindle format too, as it has been done in several other textbooks from the “Diagnistic Pathology” series. The volume, taking into account its high-quality photos performed on good tough paper, is too heavy to be constantly consulted outside e-devices. 🙂
