A fine and concise guide to lumbar herniated disc, but not much value-added over free online sites
September 27, 2017

I picked up this 60 page guide when I was having low back problems involving a slight nerve impingement. The good news is that it provided enough information to eliminate lumbar herniated disc as cause of my particular problem. That’s not saying nothing because low back problems are notoriously difficult to pinpoint and a cause often remains undiagnosed. The bad news is that this, inexpensive but not free, guide didn’t offer anything that couldn’t be found at respectable online sites like WebMD or The Mayo Clinic for free.

The guide is organized into 11 brief chapters that run from understanding what a lumbar disc is and how it becomes herniated through various treatments (self- and doctor-administered.) It also explains when the situation warrants seeing a doctor.

There are plenty of graphics in the book from computer-generated anatomical imagery to simple line drawings. They are beneficial to understanding the nature of the condition.

My recommendation would be to consider whether you need to have access to this information at times when you don’t have access to the internet. If that’s the case, it’s worth the small cost. If not, you’ll probably feel it didn’t really offer any value-added over free online sites.

Great read

I have multiple levels of herniAted discs in lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine. I read this book and found it full of info that I wish I had 20 years ago when I first herniated my lumbar discs.
It’s a great read and easy to understand. I would recommend that anyone with disc issues read it.

My initial thoughts on the Spine-Health eBook re: Lumbar Herniated Disc
November 7, 2014

I am a member of Spine-Health and monitor and use the site extensively. One thing that really enjoy about this eBook is that that you have all that information condensed into one spot without having to read through the various threads/posts.
Some members of the Spine-Health site may use the CONDITION tab of the main site to get some of the information, but its still reading one page at a time. The eBook kindle format makes it so easy to jump from topic to topic, based on the information you want.
For example, the first thing I did after looking at the TOC, was to jump to conclusions. I wanted to sum it all up. I like the conclusion section. It didnt paint a dim picture for readers. Sometime forum threads can get negative and people get very scared about back surgery. This book gives the reader hope that surgery is not the only answer. But it also tells the reader, that you cant let the medical field do it all. The patient has their own set of responsibilities in their own well being and future. I very much enjoyed the conclusion and it has been the type of upbeat positive message..

Mostly repeats information easily found on internet and refers to other links, but not really useful as unique resource. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Easily accessible information that may be found on countless websites. I was expecting more detailed information on various issues related to disk injury. For example, the surgery section tells nothing about healing time, what to expect in the days and weeks following surgery, etc.
