The way it should be…

I just wanted a sweet story to help offset life’s heaviness. What I found was a delightfully lovely tale of modern love and how it can be found in the most unexpected of places.

It’s wonderful reading a book that acknowledges the intricacies of acknowledging biases and actively working on solutions.

Highly recommend read.

A day well spent

I read this today from start to finish. While I almost never leave book reviews, “This Way Out” compelled me to say a few words. The author has created realistic, dimensional characters (I had to keep reminding myself it was a novel, not a memoir) who are grappling with some of life’s most sensitive and difficult issues—family, religion, race, culture, sexuality. The author managed to convey complexity and pain honestly, and without making any one person a true villain (because even when you love someone, you can cause them pain). I liked that there were no slick, easy answers. Amar’s (and other characters’) journey was not at all smooth; there were steps forward and back, just like real life. There is healing in the book, but it is hard-earned.

In the novel, Amar works in a bookstore, and at one point he says,”Opening up a book unlocks the imagination, it transports you to a different world, it inspires, it teaches you about people and cultures you might not otherwise know about.” This is certainly true of “This Way Out” as it provided insight into a character very unlike me, and caused me to ponder important issues from a different perspective. This author knows how to *write.* I highly recommend the book.

Great 1st Novel from First Reads

For anyone who doesn’t know, one perk from Prime is a free book each month before the official release. Occasionally it will be two free books

This month the choice was obvious with This Way Out. It is certainly fine for Pride Month but everyone of whatever orientation or faith can learn from it. Imagine the joy of finding “the one” to marry and spend your life with, but that sharing the news with your family initiates a volcanic eruption of emotions. Amar, you see, is engaged to another man and has never been out to his fairly conservative Muslim family who came to England from Bangladesh. He and his siblings were all born and raised in England but in a family steeped in their East Asian culture.

Amar makes the announcement rather abruptly and although he expected some shock, he wasn’t really prepared for the reality. Wedding plans also bring up some issues that neither he nor his future husband had fully considered. Culture differences become all to obvious with everything else going on.

One important character in the novel is Amar’s mother, even though she had died a few years before. Amar’s grief is another burden causing him angst beyond what he can manage. His need for nurture can color his relationships more than he suspects. One grounding factor is his job in a small London bookshop where he came from his hated corporate job needing to heal from the mother’s death. But like many independent bookstores in the real world, his is facing needing to shutter the shop because of too little income.

At one point Amar finally seeks the therapy he has needed for years and begins to sort out his life and identity. He must justify himself to himself to emerge whole.

This is a reminder that not all coming out stories have happy beginnings or happy endings. Our LGBT+ friends and family need support from as much community as possible. I’m reminded of identical twins I knew who were both members of the clergy and gay. In their forties both were still in the closet to their aging family. The one I knew best decided to be honest. His twin wasn’t about to be truthful and his brother agreed not to bring him in to it .

The first twin met with his elderly parents and shared his secret. The parents held very conservative interpretations of Christian dogma about homosexuality and we’re appalled. His twin not only remained in the closet but gave a short sermon about his brother going to eternal damnation. The honest twin was essentially thrown out of the family and erased from the considerable estate. Never mind that he like his brother was celibate

Contrast that with families that may not understand but refuse to withdraw love over a child’s orientation. The family in this work is Muslim, but it’s not the only religion that creates this conflict with a self identity and a sexual identity. Watching this plot may be helpful to anyone who reads this work.

Some of the writing shows traces of the author’s talents writing nonfiction and news but it doesn’t diminish the sensitivity or the emotional impact. I recommend pre-order for July release or grabbing it if you haven’t used your First Read benefit. I’m not East Asian, not gay, not Muslim and white as a fish belly and like many had some lessons in truth acceptance to learn

Beautifully bittersweet
June 6, 2022

I truly enjoyed reading this story, and became so invested in it that I finished the book in less than 24 hours. This story felt so authentic that I would have 100% believed this was a memoir instead of a work of fiction.

The story grapples with grief following the loss of a close parent and how it can impact mental health & relationships, so be aware of that going in if that is a sensitive topic for you. But 10/10 for addressing mental health and the benefits of therapy!!

There’s a veryyyyy slight love triangle I’d guess about 2/3 of the way through the book, and I genuinely did not know who the main character would end up with. Both options were completely believable and I could not put the book down until I found out who the main character chose.

What I loved the most is the story doesn’t wrap up every item with a perfect rainbows-and-sunshine bow. There are some conflicts that are not resolved with the happiest of endings. But honestly, it would have felt inauthentic and like a fantasy ending if these conflicts did not end the way they did. And it felt like the main character ended the story by acknowledging what areas he needed to work on the most instead of everything being “fixed” and him riding off into the sunset, which felt REAL. There are bittersweet resolutions to some of the conflicts, but overall the story still has enough happiness to offset any sadness. And really, isn’t finding the happiness despite sadness and bittersweet outcomes what real life is all about? Livestock Science By Selim Sekkin PDF

An emotional and compelling journey about how we need to find self acceptance before we can truly love someone else. I had trouble putting it down.

Interesting, heartwarming, and thought-provoking

Being a woman married to a woman and an avid reader, I am always drawn to novels with LGBT+ characters. So when this popped up on first reads, I had to give this a chance. I am glad I did. I barely wanted to put it down in the two days it took me to read it. Every chance I had, I was reading it. I feel like I have learned some things in reading it, too. My marriage is interracial and a combination of two cultures and religious views as well. I am glad I chose this book and I look forward to reading more novels by Tufayel Ahmed.
