Iowa man “The ABPN Maintenance of Certification (MOC) exam covered adult clinical psychiatry. There was very little child psychiatry on the exam but a substantial proportion of this book is devoted to child psych. Also the exam covered virtually nothing on theoretical concepts (development, etc.) and had very little relating to the basic skills that are covered in first few chapters of this book. I read this book end-to-end and it was not the best use of my time. If you are preparing for MOC, would suggest focusing on DSM criteria, meds, substance abuse, legal issues, defense mechanisms, reproductive issues, HIV, delirium, and associated medical conditions. If you are practicing adult psychiatry full time and are up to date, you won’t need to do too much preparation for this exam. The other problem with this book is it has SEVERAL mistakes and contradictions. Someone needs to go back over this carefully and correct them. It might be OK for the initial certification exam (except has very little neurology), but it is a waste of time for the MOC.”
ColosalClay “Meant to compliment Sadock the text is a means for self directed study that is geared for reviewing psychiatry and the boards. However, it appears mainly geared for inner city dwellers which is ironic because rural areas have saved the inner city many times over and so has government and whom can stand to eat one more snack while our steam is running out it doesn’t mean we let go and become passe’ and allow the bear of economy the capacity to run us ragged like Walstreet has not Statue of Liberty nor the Bull which resembles economics en Accion…example all the bail outs with the current administration…so to each his own and always have two sources of reference including the DMVIV… The authors have a point, at any given instantaneous point in time…any country can go bankrupt…but should it be at the expense of a misdiagnosis or a hasty diagnosis when teacher and learning are both learning and should be directed to their audience while not neglecting those that can save humanity without much help, usually not from the inner city while latter in life most do conglomerate to the retire out of the city…so yes we can not neglect MENSA those that are the gifted and average in which we have entrusted humanity through publishing, teaching and learning…which would not be government or they would get a diagnosis… Quite relevant. The realities harsh but frecuently I think the diagnosis excessive. Keep it simple and keep it Wise Potato Chips.”
REGan ““If I leave this house, it will be in handcuffs. I should have run for it while I had the chance. Now my shot is gone.” – Prologue, ‘The Housemaid’ by Freida McFadde.

I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Lauryn Allman.

Right from the above opening lines I was hooked.
This is one of those domestic noirs/psychological thrillers that I feel is best read ‘cold’, so just the barest of details.

After the Prologue we go back three months earlier.
The housemaid of the title is Millie, who has applied for the position of live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. Millie is on parole and really needs this job. No further details though as might be expected from this type of thriller and the Prologue’s teaser, things get quite complicated.

Most of the novel focuses upon the dynamic between these three adults, though there is also the Winchester’s spoiled nine-year-old daughter, Cecelia, to add to Millie’s torments. At her first meeting with ‘CeCe’ she thinks “I’d say there’s at least a twenty-five percent chance she’s going to murder me in my sleep if I get this job. But I still want it.”

With respect to the audiobook, I felt that Lauryn Allman did an excellent job of capturing the characters, especially the two narrative points of view, Millie and Nina. Her voice is quite mellow and very easy to listen to. I have enjoyed her narration on two other recent audiobooks.

Overall, one of the best, twisty, unputdownable psychological thrillers that I have read for a while. After such a positive experience, I plan to check out Freida McFadden’s earlier novels as well as look out for her future projects.”
