MD “I really liked Mortom by Eric Therme and was anxious to jump into ‘If She Dies’, another thrill ride by the author. Unfortunately, the roller coaster had no twists and turns and plodded straight along at a snail’s pace. No thrills, no mystery and not even a likeable character was to be found.
Tess is a mess. She tragically lost her daughter in an auto accident (although she acts like it was premeditated murder) and nine months later she continues to wallow in self-pity as though she is the only one suffering through the loss of five year old Lily. She has abandoned her husband emotionally. She is a narcissistic, guilt ridden, sometimes clingy, neurotic, and a totally pathetic liar that speculates conspiracies everywhere as she systematically trashes her marriage. Her husband, Josh is also guilt ridden, but I don’t know exactly why. His favorite way to start any conversation, “I’m sorry.” Basically, he’s Tess’s punching bag. Colin, Tess’s brother is selfish, self-centered and comes in and out of the picture with no apparent reason except to feed his own self-interest. Therme injects people into the story as he needs them, like Jo, never heard of until a character is needed to paint Tess out of a corner at the 80% mark.
I really got sick of listening to the repetitive sniveling protagonist, but I finished the book, although it was a task, not a pleasure. The non-ending was especially frustrating. I know that Therme can do better but count me out on the sequel.”

I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition, narrated by Lauryn Allman.
Right from the above opening lines I was hooked.
This is one of those domestic noirs/psychological thrillers that I feel is best read ‘cold’, so just the barest of details.
After the Prologue we go back three months earlier.
The housemaid of the title is Millie, who has applied for the position of live-in housekeeper for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. Millie is on parole and really needs this job. No further details though as might be expected from this type of thriller and the Prologue’s teaser, things get quite complicated.
Most of the novel focuses upon the dynamic between these three adults, though there is also the Winchester’s spoiled nine-year-old daughter, Cecelia, to add to Millie’s torments. At her first meeting with ‘CeCe’ she thinks “I’d say there’s at least a twenty-five percent chance she’s going to murder me in my sleep if I get this job. But I still want it.”
With respect to the audiobook, I felt that Lauryn Allman did an excellent job of capturing the characters, especially the two narrative points of view, Millie and Nina. Her voice is quite mellow and very easy to listen to. I have enjoyed her narration on two other recent audiobooks.
Overall, one of the best, twisty, unputdownable psychological thrillers that I have read for a while. After such a positive experience, I plan to check out Freida McFadden’s earlier novels as well as look out for her future projects.”
