A delightful foray into storytelling
April 27, 2022

I will likely never have the courage to tell a story at The Moth, but that doesn’t mean knowing how to tell a story with conviction, confidence, and efficiency is without merit. We all know someone who meanders, loses the plot, and sometimes frustrates all those in attendance, and this book could actually help even those who struggle carrying a normal conversation. This book acts as an entertaining primer into storytelling, but also acts as a guide on how to be a more effective conversationalist. The applications are relevant to anyone that wants to interact with other people in the best way possible. And yes, there are stories which are delightful. It’s worth your time.

GREAT HOW TO BOOK FROM THE ESSENTIAL STORYTELLING ORGANIZATION

First off, I am a huge fan the moth! I’ve gone to many shows over the years and always love to catch the moth radio hour. I love that I get to go behind the scenes and learn great tools for how to express myself better and perfect my stories. I LOVE the real world examples in the book of some of my favorite storytellers. Great fun read for anyone who loves the Moth and storytelling in general!

Tell your own story…to a crowd
April 27, 2022
I have a nasty little secret (for a book review blogger). I don’t like to read book blurbs. It spoils the surprise for me. Because of this possible flaw, How to Tell a Story was not what I expected. It is specifically discussing how to prepare to tell a true story from your life experiences to a Moth event audience.

Though there is absolutely no chance that I will be doing a Moth event, there are still valuable lessons in this book. Everyone can use a more productive way to look back at their life to see what lessons they’ve learned or tragedies they’ve survived. Even fiction writers will enjoy the concise overview and concrete options of how to structure great stories with beginnings and endings that grab the reader and leave them thinking about the plot far longer than it takes to close the book.

If you are planning on telling a story on stage, How to Tell a Story will help immensely. For fiction writers, there are probably better writing guides. 3 stars.

Thanks to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for a digital review copy of the book.

For Anyone Who Loves The Moth and Wants to Be A Better Storyteller
April 28, 2022

Ok, now I feel like I can throw my name into the hat at a Moth story slam. I have been a long-time fan of The Moth and this is the behind-the-scenes look that I have been longing for. The writers go deep into the mechanics of what makes a great story and there are so many ideas and tips that I found surprising and would have not considered. Makes you really look at your own material in a new way. Definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to tell a Moth story, or even just kill it at the next dinner party.

I really loved this book!

I’m a huge Moth fan (who isn’t?) so when I heard they were writing the book, I got super excited.

And, while I’d likely never take the stage, there is SO much in here that can help with every day situations -from job interviews to toasts.

Wedding season, here I come!
