Tumble down the rabbit hole and find yourself in my inky black and white Wonderland… I’m an illustrator and ink evangelist who prefers pens and pencils to pixels. I create intricate, hand drawn illustrations that adorn colouring books, coffee cups, trainers, walls, beer bottles and even walls!
My creativity is cultivated by a curious imagination and a delight in the fantastic. Much of my work has roots in the flora and fauna that surrounded me growing up on my parent’s fish farm in rural Scotland.
Every piece I create starts life as a simple pencil sketch, evolving into a rambling pen and ink drawing usually spanning several sheets of paper. I love the tactile nature of the materials I use and the joy of smudgy fingerprints. My delicate hand inked designs intend to charm and delight, inviting you to peer closer and discover the hidden intricacies.
For me, computer generated graphics can feel cold and soulless whereas hand drawing captures a sense of energy and character which no pixel can ever replicate. I’m on a mission to vanquish the vector and champion the (wobbly) hand drawn line.

The first how to draw that worked for me.

Okay so I love to color. I’m no where near as good as the colorists out there that inspire me but I enjoy it and find it relaxing. When this book came out I was hesitant but preordered because I’ve loved all her books so far. Johanna posted a little tutorial to give a taste of what to expect and I was amazed that I could actually draw some things. I’ve tried other how to draw books before but they were either to hard or things I’m not interested in. No I won’t have my own book out any time soon but I have gained a love for drawing. Some things in the book are challenging because I haven’t drawn since a kid but I persevere and find I don’t do to bad at all.
If you’ve ever looked at a picture in a coloring book and wished you could do it than get the book and give it a try. There will be practice involved but how many rode a bike the first try. Then that feeling of flying down the street once you’ve gotten it.

Not the new book smell for which I was hoping!

Ah, new book smell. Don’t we all look forward to it? I know I do, but this book didn’t remind me of libraries or book stores. In fact, it smells so badly I cannot get close to it. My book smells so strongly of oil or some sort of petroleum odor that I cannot stand to open the cover. It’s been a terrible experience. The book gave me a headache. I’ve tried airing it out. I left it by a window, and it still smells terrible. After I touched it, my hands had the same odor.
That said, the paper is nice and thick but also unfortunately saturated with the smell of engine exhaust. I’ll be returning it for one that doesn’t smell like a Texas oil field.

A must for Basford fans

The book cover is very enticing. I don’t believe the book fulfills the promise or premise. To draw for coloring this style, probably the best tool is a computer program for reproducing a symmetrical single doodle or a quarter page. Right now, I don’t have one. I wouldn’t meticulously repeat an image or group. I do enjoy her method and am interested in eventually acquiring her other books which would be more relaxing to color. I’d be way happier with more stylized birds than now and cute forest animals. That’s why I’m adding mine in. This book is for diehard Basford fans. I doodle in the book when watching TV. I can’t make perfect petal flowers manually. If wanting to make stylized flowers, get Lisa Congdon’s books. Among those are : 500 fabulous flowers, wildflowers, botanicals, and Flora and fauna.
Additionally: To make mirror images, use dedicated tracing paper and graphite transfer paper. For more images to draw to fill in white spaces, refer to her other, actual coloring books. Any children’s how to draw forest creatures, jungle animals, and florals will help.

i LOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE johanna basford i have alot of her coloring books an i plan to use this book to help me with my drawing for card making been waiting forever on this book!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this book i bought a second at walmart lol
