Michael “I’m learning a lot about the gut, but the problem is I just don’t know how much of it is true, because she comes to basic conclusions that are obviously flat-out wrong.
Very early on, she writes “That’s why you should always close the bottle or container of olive oil carefully after use and keep it in the fridge.” Anyone who cooks knows that olive oil is solid when refrigerated… which is why literally nobody keeps it in the fridge.
If she throws around falsehoods like this that are so easily disproven, it makes it really hard for me believe any of the hundreds of other conclusions about our gut peppered throughout the book.”
MGoBlueBob “Recommended as I have a sensitive gut and have battled it for decades.
The book traces your digestive system from your mouth to the tail end (pun intended!). Sounds boring, right? Not at all! The author gives very understandable and fascinating descriptions of each component in the system, often citing research studies and their results to reinforce recent, key learnings about the system.
I have bought multiple copies to give to friends and colleagues.
The digestive tract and it’s health is incredible and may just be the next big thing in personalized medicine!
Highly, highly recommended!”
J. Rodeck “*Gut* is a good introduction to human food processing with useful information about numerous digestive/elimination cycle ailments. [There’s actually a pabout Parkinson’s – like a symptoms found on Guam due to cycad seeds.] Well-researched and opens up new issues such as the gut/mood connection.
A good editor could have made this effort much better. It too germophobic. We really don’t need to be taught that germs stay on wet sponges or that dishes must not only be washed but rinsed.
Good Sample: Some 80% of the processed foods found on the shelves of modern day American supermarkets contain added sugar.
On the down side is authorial amateurishness:
[cutesy] “When a bad bacterium turns up, it finds them sitting in its favorite spot with satisfied grins on their faces and their handbags on the seat . . . .”
“Personally, I think the ‘better safe than sorry’ approach is appropriate here.”
Reading level: challenging. Anatomical science gets deep for the layman.”
