A book I’ve needed for a long time but didn’t know I needed it

September 28, 2020

A Cinderella story. Our club championship was delayed for a week due to hazardous air conditions in Portland, OR. On September 19th, 2020 after the club championship should have already been decided I was golfing with some friends and one of them asked if I had heard of this book. I hadn’t. He said he really liked the book and suggested that I should check it out and that he would send a link for me to look it up. When I got home I didn’t wait for the link, I looked it up on my own. The reviews seemed very positive so I ordered the digital version. I read about 20% of it the first night before our rescheduled club championship and realized that I had fallen into many mental traps in my 50 years of golfing. I won’t go into details because I think you should read this book too. Suffice to say I put the ideas from this book into play and shot my best tournament scores since 1993 and won the club championship. I continued reading the book over the duration of our championship week. There is no doubt in my mind that this book made the difference. Without my change in mental outlook I would not have won. I thought I “knew it all” about golf due to my extensive experience and if I hit a bad shot I could correct my swing on the course. Wrong. It was the reason my scores got worse. The harder I tried the worse I played. In addition I had no goal or dream for golf. I do now. Bottom line, this book put fun back into golf for me and better scores too. If you buy it I hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

 Practical examples for practical golf…

This book is a great read on how to overcome the mental war that is fought in the most difficult 6 inches in golf – the space between our ears. As I read the book, I was taken back to how many times I purposed to “adjust” my game mid-round only to make things worse. Likewise I was taken to the rounds where things flowed – drives in the fairway, woods/irons on approaches that were greenside at worst, sand traps that were a pleasure to hit from, putts that sank at will. No I am not a scratch golfer or even a high-teens handicap, but someone who just loves the game (yes, that means a 20+ handicap). Mr. Rotella’s words will coach you through the essentials of proper mental attitude, focus on the value of life inside the 120 yard marker, putting with purpose. If you want mechanics of the swing, there are great books out there. If you want to get your head into it and hence your heart to live it – get this book….it truly is a game changer.

 Actually helps

I came across these Dr. Bob books at a recommendation when I was a low handicap, but was struggling to progress and keep getting better. This was the best book in the series in my opinion, but the others are worth it too. This book gives you the mental aspect of the game that helps you greatly reduce mental mistakes and, more importantly, compound mistakes from frustration. I eventually was able to lower my handicap significantly because of the mental game. I recommend this book for all golfers, but especially golfers who have a strong game but are struggling to make more consistent shots.

The approach to golf that this book walked me through has changed my game in one week. My entire outlook to practice and playing on the course no matter what happens has changed.

A positive outlook and a realistic, practical approach to your game is paramount to elevating your game. The author walks you through how to change how you are thinking while practicing and playing.

I would recommend this book to any level of player.
