required reading for course

Bought this as a recommended text for a course. It is reasonable, but significantly out of date and in particular the colour illustrations are very limited. I take into account the fact that textbooks by their very nature will be out of date by the time they are published. However, for a text dealing with a subject where coloured illustrations, and up to date information are critically important, you might think that these issues are important.
Explanations in the text are good, but it’s not a source of information that I go back to.
