The Unknown Beloved: Decent book, well written, skipped the gruesome – 3.5 stars

I like Amy Harmon, although more with her earlier works. She writes well but my issue with her later works has to do with the history/times. I don’t like reading about serial killers or mysteries or misery. I read this book because it was written by Amy. However, I skipped over all the “true” details of the story: the victims and how they were cut up. This was a dark book with a tiny bit of love. I’d rather read a love story that may have a tiny bit of dark. I bought From Sand and Ash in 2016 and still haven’t read it. I don’t want to read about Germany, Jews/suffering, WWII, even though the reviews are good, and I know I like Amy’s writing. I only bought it because it was written by Amy. I may need to rethink buying her books, even though some of my favorite books were her earlier works. I wonder how she can go so deep into the dark truth of history and not have sadness/nightmares? Still, Amy has a talent for writing and storytelling that is better than many authors I have read. (and I read a lot)

Every book a treat!

Amy Harmon never disappoints me. I have read all her books, and I’m always impatient for the next. Her range seems without limits, but there is always something mystical about her stories. This is especially so in her excellent historical fiction, but it is never overdone, never fantastical as found in fairy tales and wildly made-up writings by other writers. She writes of loving, something she obviously knows and feels deeply about, and can portray with great skill, both in its upsides and complexities and challenges. “The Unknown Beloved” is a lovely example of this. And, in this example, I learned something about love that I had not appreciated before, at least not so clearly as she describes in an important conversation near the end.

Beautiful storytelling
April 30, 2022

This story is set in the 1930s in Cleveland, Ohio. There is a Butcher on the loose, cutting heads off of his victims and leaving body parts strewn about all over for Eliot Ness, the detective on the case, to find and stew over. Enter ? Malone, who is brought to Cleveland undercover by Ness to try to stir up some leads to bring the killer to justice. He boards at the Koss residence, where he meets Dani Flanagan. Ironically, he met her when she was a ten year old girl and he was a cop in Chicago. Her parents were both murdered, and he is assigned to take the poor girl to Cleveland to live with her great aunts. She recognizes him instantly as the man who believed in her strange gift back then. But he wants nothing to do with the odd girl now. She is just a distraction. But this story brings them together (of course, since it’s a mystery-historical romance). As he helps her in clothing and naming the unknown dead who come to the morgue nearby where she lives, and she helps him with his case by using her “gift,” their hearts come together. But Malone can’t trust his heart to a woman ever again, so he sees no good coming from his growing affection for Dani.

That’s enough background to give you a feel for this book. Harmon is a master storyteller who always makes history and her characters come alive while making the reader form questions about life and seek for the answers in her stories. This one is about how even nobodys are somebodys. Dani’s compassion for all the nobodys in her realm of influence was inspiring and touching. This was a great Who-Dun-It Mystery romance that taught me about a true historical event (the Cleveland Butcher was a real person who was never brought to justice) and sparked empathy in my heart for all those who feel they are nobody in this world. I highly recommend this story.
