It gives you all the info you’ll need for OB/GYN clerkship, but it’s not perfect
April 20, 2019

It’s a useful source for getting you through the typical OB/GYN third-year clerkship. You could easily read about a chapter a day, as each chapter is anywhere from 4 to 15 pages or so. It’s more information than you’ll need for purposes of studying for the shelf exam, but luckily it doesn’t give way too much information. For example, if there is generally one or two accepted treatments available for a certain condition, this book will list four or five without pointing out the most well-known ones–so it’s easy to get information overloaded. Unfortunately many of the sections are poorly organized. You will find yourself going back and forth through different sections and bullet points to understand how to diagnose a condition or what the proper treatment is. Overall, it’s an improvement on the previous edition, especially with the color images and charts. Still could use some editing, though.

Almost There

Lacks a section about breast cancer/masses. Technically not the best source for preparing for the surgical side of OB/GYN, the anatomy review is light and there’s not enough images on that topic. Would not use this to prep for the wave of pimping that would happen in the OR, may be okay for outpatient situations, though.

Otherwise, the book covers just about everything else– probably a little too in depth in cancer, but there is a decent amount on infections and even some urogyn. Would only buy this if you like having textbooks and have another resource to consult for the topics mentioned above. May change my review depending on how the NBME goes.

Update: Got the score I wanted, but definitely wouldn’t have gotten there without the addition of UWorld. TLDR for this product is to get it and read it the weekend before the clerkship if you feel like you need a refresher.

Underrated Text for Shelf Exam
January 29, 2019

I’m a third year medical student who used this book during my Ob/Gyn rotation as reference and to study for the shelf. It has good explanations for basics like fetal monitoring, stages of labor, etc. It’s comprehensive for shelf topics and is in a semi-outline format that I find much easier to ready than blocks of text. Between UWorld, UWise, and this book I aced the shelf. Only complaint is its hard to carry in white coat, but you can roll it in half and make it work.

… is a book most people don’t mention as being good for the clerkship/shelf

This is a book most people don’t mention as being good for the clerkship/shelf. However I found it extremely useful and fairly comprehensive. I used this + UWorld and scored in the 95th percentile.

Not even close to the correct book.

Received book Guide to the code of ethics for nurses with interpretive statements by Marsha Fowler. What was ordered was First Aid for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship, Fourth Edition. So either the person filling the order could not read or just did not care. I’m betting on the latter.

Not Like The Other First Aid Books
June 12, 2018

Truly obscene quantity of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors that makes me worry about the accuracy of the information within it. I’ve always used First Aid books to prepare for NBME shelf exams, Step 1 & CK/CS. This is not on par with those products. Do not recommend.

Short but thorough

This book is everything you need for your clerkship. Seriously. I do not like to use lengthy text books, and I found with hands-on experience in the hospital and then reading this book to supplement or reinforce your knowledge, you are sure to be successful!

Recommend for the obgyn rotation and 2CK
March 18, 2015

FA managed to do really well here. I used this to prep for the 2CK and found it to be an easy read. Covers a broad range of topics in sufficient (i.e., not excessive or long-winded) detail. Would definitely recommend this as an adjunct to an obgyn rotation and for the 2CK.
