The first thing I noticed about this novel is that the author tries too hard. Writing a book is always an accomplishment of course, but the language was just a little too over the top. I expected it to be better written.
The second thing I realized was that the very first scene devolved into a child and her aunt coming upon the axed bodies of their pet cat and her newly-delivered kittens, killed by “Daddy” and graphically described. Not what I signed up for.
And just like that I was done reading.

I think that a book that was an award winner and translated into many languages by a studious person who works in the art arena is worth a look. Also, it is about an area of the world where very few people I know are from but there are those few that I love. It isn’t just some dead kittens with not much detail but bloating but what is discovered next. I don’t always read first reads, choosing the children’s books, but I am looking forward to this hoping for some insight into people from that part of the world. Some homespun descriptions. Just to counter the other reviewer about the first pages!

Powerful book!

The witch trials in American were benign compared to the Goddess history in the mid-20th century. This book is a novel but based in history. Mysogeny was/is rampant. HIS story is endlessly repeated. Wise strong women are persecuted. This book is a must read for feminists. We are once again on the edge of another dark age. I was a budding feminist in the 1970’s. We worked so hard to change sexism. The cycles of HIStory are tragic.

A Challenging and Timely Read

The Last Goddess is not an easy book to read, but it is an important one. In the novel Czech author, Katherina Tuckova, examines the history of healing women, who one might call goddesses, or even witches. The main character, Dora, is young woman who studies this history and learns not only that a beloved family member is such a healer, but also that she herself comes from a long line of goddesses. As Dora continues her studies and researches both her family and the sordid past of witch hunts, she finds that history is a confounding mix of fact and fiction.
This is very much a concept-driven story, in that it explores the role of women, especially women who dare to break society’s rules concerning how they should behave. I cannot say that I enjoyed reading about how such women were treated, but the brutality that Dora uncovers in her research is never used for shock value, rather it shows the dangers of the path that “goddesses” chose in the distance and the not-so-distance past.
The book too presents some challenges, particularly to an American reader, who may not know much about the Czech Republic and its Moravian witch trials, or even its more recent history as an Eastern Bloc country. Some such knowledge is needed. The style too, which relies on academic and government reports, can be daunting to read.
Still, I recommend this timely book for any reader who likes to learn about different cultures and who reads not simply for entertainment, but to also understand the larger world around them. We need more such novels today.

Lovely So Far

I don’t usually write reviews before finishing a book, but since the other reviews are awful and it’s clear that the other reviewer didn’t even get into the first chapter, I’m going ahead. I can update when I’ve finished.
So far the story is lyrically written and beautiful. Yes, it does start off with a traumatic event but the description isn’t nearly as lingering as the other review claims.
So far it seems to be a very unique take on stories of witchcraft and folk magic and I’m really looking forward to see where the story takes me.
