Attributes of Evolution of the cerebellar sense of self PDF

Evolution of the cerebellar sense of self PDF-The cerebellum is an intriguing component of the brain. In humans it occupies only 10% of the brain volume, yet has approximately 69 billion neurons; that is 80% of the nerve cells in the brain. The cerebellum first arose in jawed vertebrates such as sharks, and sharks in fact have an
additional cerebellum-like structure that works as an adaptive filter. The function of shark cerebellum-like structures is to discriminate ‘self’ from ‘other’ in sensory inputs. With the evolution of the true cerebellum the adaptive filter functionality was adopted for motor control and paved the
way for athleticism and movement finesse that we see in swimming, running, climbing and flying vertebrates.

This book uses an evolutionary perspective to open up the exciting body of work that is cerebellar research to a wide audience. Understanding the brain is of interest to many people, from many different backgrounds, and for many different reasons. Therefore, understanding cerebellum is a significant
step towards the wider challenge of understanding the brain.

This book wil be of interest to neuroscientists, neurologists and psychologists, in addition to computer scientists, and engineers concerned with machine/human interactions and robotics.

Gert Bo Thorgersen
A great book to use as a lexicon concerning bone and joint problems.
June 8, 2020

To me the book turned out to be better than expected, a book with many fantastic sharp radiographs, good drawings and photos. I already own hundreds of doctor books, but these mostly with science writings, so to me this book is mostly to be used as a lexicon, but a lexicon which also shows, and explains, how the cases can be solved. The only thing which I am missing in the book, is more warning, against Bisphosphonates than just “to be used by care”. For example, in Yuehuei H. An.: “Orthopaedic Issues in Osteoporosis”, stand up for 30 minutes, after taking it because if laying down it may cause holes in the channel from the mouth the stomach. Besides its half-life is 10 year, and it can result in blindness or loosing teeth. But again, it’s a fantastic good, and easy to read, book.

A thoroughly comprehensive book for anyone in the medical profession wanting an introduction. This is first and foremost a medical textbook – it’s written and designed for those studying. It’s therefore forgivable for not being the easiest read, as it’s not aimed at the layman. Medical jargon packed, and proper terms of use are used to describe bone structures and symptoms – it’s clinical, so a previous degree of clinical knowledge is required. It’s largely focused on initial assessments of orthopaedic traumas. Foot issues, problems arising at birth, and chronic changes when first presented are mostly what are covered. It’s half a guide, half a textbook, with before and after scans of surgery and explanations of where bone traumas can exist and what defines them as so. A well designed and useful book for clinical practice.

An informative study aid with illustrations and descriptions throughout to provide you with a quick and reference guide on orthopaedics and trauma.
Written by a team of experts and predominantly targeted at GPs, GP registrars, junior doctors and study aid for doctors in training.
Scans, images and line drawings which provide guidance on the diagnosis, treatment and management of orthopaedic conditions.
Not being a doctor myself I still found the book interesting and intriguing. I have several family members who suffer from joint and bone problems so I wanted to learn more about the conditions.
While I don’t pretend to understand everything contained in book it is informative and has a reader friendly approach which means I can understand the majority.
Several chapters covering subjects such as initial assessment, with each joint having its own chapter and different treatments and managements available to help treat.
An good resource for all healthcare professionals.

This is a very good quality and well produced resource book intended to help with better understanding the diagnosis, treatment and management of orthopaedic conditions which is perfect for students studying orthopaedics (specific routes or general student doctors/nurses), physiotherapists, sports physicians and other healthcare professionals. Much of this is focused on assessing an orthopedic condition initially and the book is incredibly helpful on that front with tons of diagrams, illustrations, x-rays, scans and photos to support the written text. Through this and the 24 very well laid out and indexed chapters the book is very user friendly and it’s easy to head straight to a specific body part or issue. A brilliant resource for any healthcare professional exposed to musculoskeletal/orthopaedic related disorders.

Great Entry into the Subject Matter

The book has a semi-hardback, flexible, glossy cover and has 215-pages of x-rays, scan, diagrams, photos (some not for the fainthearted) and information. It’s broken down into a total of 24 chapters covering such things as Orthopaedic Trauma, Management of Adult Fractures, Orthopaedic Procedures, etc and chapters on most areas of the body.
It’s well written and, for a lay-man, pretty easy to understand and follow. All the imagery is great, some a bit gory, but I personally like that.

I actually got this for my daughter, who’s very keen on all this stuff and wants to be a surgeon, but having had spine surgery myself, I found this an interesting and informative read.
