Feminist “theory” instead of medicine. Absolute rubbish. Treating the social issues over the health concerns. Total dismissal of the medical model. Full of “woke” drivel that does not apply to real health care. Dangerously inaccurate and totally incomplete. AVOID at all costs. Learn from a book like this, and your patients will suffer. NOT a medical or nursing textbook… not worth the paper it is printed on— If I could give negative stars, I would.

I find this book being a poor representation of “women’s health” and a better representation of “woke” culture, promoting the ideologies of the alphabet organizations and the feminist movement. It really is a shame that authors of college literature are focused on intertwining their poorly contrived sociological “issues” and their social agendas with science. For instance, in chapter 6, “Gynecologic Anatomy and Physiology,” the authors proceed to explain their rationale for discussing the “traditionally labeled” female anatomy and physiology, while ensuring they clarify that not all people “assigned” female at birth identify as female or women. Why is this needed? Various interjections are made throughout the book to appease the woke reader and ensure them that classical science, likely constructed by MEN of Western civilization, was vile, sexist, and racist. For instance, before venturing into chapter 6, we are given a history lesson that science historically equated female genitalia to the female psyche. Later on, when introducing the menstrual cycle, we are told that “society has encouraged the notion that a woman’s normalcy is based on her ability to bear children.” Can I see a reference with some statistics on this? Again, a poorly written book with ulterior motives and plenty of errors (see my photo for “bones of the female pelvis” which shows no bones but discusses “risky sex behaviors”). It’s a shame I must subject myself to reading this for my masters degree.

Pushes an ideological framework antithetical to medical knowledge

Chapter 1 could be cited as reason for the attacks on APRNs… Consider the section “Social models versus biomedical models of health”, which establishes the authors’ approach to health care, beyond question. They in no way concise, explain that the feminist social model of health, emphasizing critical theory and intersectionality, is superior to the medical alternative.

Compare this text to Callahan and Caughey’s Obstetrics & Gynecology Blueprints and the staunch contrast is immediately evident. One teaches core concepts absolutely essential, the diseases, disorders, diagnoses and treatment succinctly and straightforward., while the other contains so many words it’d be rejected were it a ppt slide, yet says little in comparison.
