The Writers

I have not seen a book cover this specific topic before and it does it very wellIt is well written and as would be expected from a dermatology book, contains high quality illustrations. I would suspect that a full time dermatologist would be interested in owning this excellent book. The price also includes access to an electronic version and all you have to do is rub off the covering on the inside front cover to obtain access to the code. This adds to the usefulness of an interesting and educational book and I am sure if you are involved in the management of a patient who has an emergency dermatology issue, then this book could be very helpful indeed

Shatteringly painful and quietly heroic

This book starts out holding back nothing. Seemingly typical morning for a mother dropping the children off at preschool and suddenly a car accident changes this pediatrician’s life. Not so much because of the injuries but because the true nature of those around her in her life is suddenly revealed and I don’t mean in a good way.

The pain in this memoir is not just physical pain of having suffered a traumatic accident but the emotional pain of being dragged through divorce and child custody and child support with uncaring partners who suddenly are an enemy rather than a support system. And this trauma brings back all the childhood trauma of abuse that the author suffered.

You might cry. I wanted to.

Recommended for anyone who’s been through a life trauma especially accident and divorce and abuse but be warned if you are triggered by painful stories.

The title itself suggests the story’s many conflicts.

I am not Korean, so I think I am unable to fully understand the family and cultural demands that were placed upon this author during her formative years. But my former mother-in-law was Korean, raised in China, and came to the U.S., alone, as a young teenager. Most of her nuclear family had been killed by the Communist Chinese; as far as I know, only she and a sister had managed to escape and then arrived in the States. She was college-educated here and was very gifted musically. But what I remember most, which I also sensed in this author, was how deep-seated and profound, and unresolved, her grief was. This author’s story is essentially one of trying to resolve her grief issues by trying to meet the expectations of others, in both her personal and professional life. And I don’t think that approach has ever worked, ever. This book is perhaps an attempt to proclaim that everything turned out okay, but my impression was that it suggested that nothing did. A phrase from one of my favorite authors perfectly describes the tone and tenor of this memoir. It’s a story about “ the sadness of being human”. I am very sympathetic to this author’s suffering, but a book about suffering, with no suggestion that the situation has changed, is not an enjoyable book to read. If I want to feel sad and depressed I can just watch the news.

A most depressing memoir
April 8, 2022

This is definitely not a memoir I could recommend reading if you’re looking for something uplifting. Rather, it is a depressing account of a Korean woman, Helena Rho, who’s family immigrates to the US when she is a child. She writes about how she hated being a pediatrician, how dysfunctional her parents were, how pitiful and selfish her sisters are, how abusive her ex-husband was, how racist and misogynistic people who are not Korean are, and how many Koreans treated her badly because she couldn’t speak Korean proficiently. On the upside, she did have a good experience connecting with her relatives in Korea and spending a month in Cuba. In the Author’s note, she acknowledges her son and how grateful she is to him, but says nothing of her daughter, whom she praised in the book until she dropped out of college, This makes me think she destroyed that relationship as well. If it weren’t for the fact that it is a short read, I would have stopped reading it.
