In the first chapter of human embryology, the stages of development of the individual (human being) before birth (prenatal) and after birth (postnatal period) have been mentioned along with the period of growth. The purpose is to familiarize various terminologies during the embryological study. During the intrauterine development of the human, the first three months is the most critical period. Any mishap during this period gives rise to termination of pregnancy or abnormal development of the organs involved. All the germ layers—ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm develop from epiblast. The hypoblast gives rise to the extra embryonic mesoderm. The following four chapters explain about the formation of germ layers, bilaminar and trilaminar embryonic discs, foldings of the embryo and the embryo assuming the miniature of the human being. All the organs and organ systems are developed by the end of the first trimester and further growth, differentiation and establishment of function occurs in the next trimesters. The nutrition to the embryo is by yolk sac initially but is taken over by the placenta later. The pharyngeal apparatus, various systems like the alimentary canal, its associated glands, the respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, genital, endocrine systems, nervous system and special sensory organs along with the endocrine organs develop in the second and third trimesters. The placenta is the organ having a short life of 9 months, performs functions for the: maintenance of pregnancy till the end of 9 months and also to expel the fetus once it is mature. Various stages in the development, the germ layers involved in the formation and differentiation of the tissue are extremely important and any interruption in this process of development gives rise to anomalies. Concise, but still packed full of useful information

Unlike other reviewers, the holes align perfectly in the binder and the pages do not catch on the binding. This book came in perfect condition (I purchased directly through , not a 3rd party vendor). So far this book seems like it is packed full of accurate, up to date treatment recommendations. It’s concise, but still includes plenty of useful information. Fits in my lab-coat pocket nicely. This will definitely be a go-to for the remainder of my practicum and when I begin practicing on my own.

Really helpful for clinic

I’m a 3rd year med student and bought this for my year long primary care clinic. I love it! It’s been really helpful. Only downside is that the pages don’t fit quite right in the binder so sometimes they get stuck or are hard to turn. I’ve learned to turn the pages in sections, which has been working fine. Haven’t ripped any pages yet and have had this for months. Overall, the content is so good that it makes this minor annoyance bearable.

Helps me be more efficient in clinic. I’ll usually give it a look before I staff a pt with my attending. When they have more insight that what the book provides I just annotate the page. I added extra loose leaf for more notes and cases not included that I run into frequently.

the book to have on rotations and residency

No matter if you are a new student or resident, I think it is important to keep some resources handy in your white coat. for me, this book does the trick. it has enough inpatient information and outpatient knowledge to be complete and thorough. more importantly, it is succinct and helpful enough for you to see your patients in a short period of time. Would definitely recommend to any level of student for practice.

2ND EDITION- PAGES DONT TURN.

SECOND TRY EDIT- Returned my first copy and got a second copy. Same problems with second as I wrote about with the first below. Sort reviews by recent and you’ll see that the 2nd edition as sold by is no good. I have high hopes for the content still, so maybe try buying from another seller? All I can say is be sure to avoid the one as sold by .com itself.

ORIGINAL REVIEW-
For my new copy of the 2nd edition, the loose leaf holes are not cut to line up with the binder. Also, the binding teeth don’t line up with each other. This results in pages that can barely be turned and are at risk of ripping every time you do get them to start turning over. My POCKET MEDICINE SIXTH EDITION did not have these problems and is my favorite reference book. I am a medical student, and I used POCKET MEDICINE daily on the internal medicine service during my clinical rotation (please see my 5-star review of that text). I looked forward to using POCKET PRIMARY CARE in my upcoming sub-internship, but for $60 on a pocket book, I was really hoping to be able to turn the pages. The content appears to be great, but a book that is not functional is no good to me. Will be returning to seller. From reading other reviews this is a problem that seems to come up often; I’d hold off on buying unless you are willing to hope to get a good copy and return it if you are unlucky.
