Attributes of Double Talkin’ Jive PDF

In Double Talkin’ Jive legendary drummer Matt Sorum takes music lovers behind the scenes of a remarkable life in rock. Sorum, whose albums have sold tens of millions of copies around the world, provides an honest, engaging account of the highs and lows of superstardom. Sorum recounts his childhood years idolizing Ringo Starr and surviving an abusive stepfather. After leaving high school, Sorum sold pot to get by. Over time, his drug dealing escalated to smuggling large quantities of cocaine, a career that came to a halt following a dramatic shoot-out. Sorum fled his old life and settled in Hollywood, where he’d enjoy a rapid ascension to rock ’n’ roll immortality. He caught his big break drumming for The Cult, and only a year later was invited to join Guns N’ Roses, with whom he’d record two of rock’s most iconic albums: Use Your Illusion I and II. Double Talkin’ Jive PDF

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee & Grammy Award winning Sorum opens up with forthright honesty, sharing anecdotes from his time touring the globe, battling drug and alcohol addiction, as well as working with Axl Rose, one of the greatest frontmen in rock, Slash and the rest of the GN’R team. His career with The Cult, Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Motörhead, the Hollywood Vampires, and Kings of Chaos costars an ensemble of rock royalty, from Billy Idol to Steven Tyler, Billy F Gibbons, and Alice Cooper.

Double Talkin’ Jive goes beyond the clichés of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, telling the very human story of what it takes to make it in music, and the toll stardom exacts from those who achieve success. Sorum invites fans to revel in the debauchery of the good times, but also paints a stark portrait of life after the party. Music fans of any generation will find value in the pages of this evocative, thoughtful, and candid autobiography.

Sex Drugs and Rock and Roll and a Drummer full of himself

This follows the author and rock and roll drummer for the Cult and Guns and Roses and Velvet revolver and a few other bands. I waited for this book to come and now I wonder why this because of the flow might be a little better than average I would give a 3.5 rating. I have read a few of these books from various rock stars and they all to seem about the same. I am surprised that this is written by a 60 year old man as it is sophomoric at best and you would think it was written may someone in their early 20’s. I was really hoping there would be more to this book concerning stories about the Cult and GNR. GNR covers about 50 to 60 % of the book. Give this a read but do not expect much from it. This guy is definitely full of himself and even though you have heard a lot of the stories concerning individuals in the rock and roll world he definitely throws them under the bus

Pretty good rock autobiography

Enjoyable read. There are some things in the book that were new to me. The most interesting stories involve bandmate relationships. A guy can tell a thousand stories about drugs and sex (which he does), and those are like filler material. I’ve got no problem with Matt, and I think his book is honest from his point of view. His feelings are obviously hurt over not being part of a GN’R reunion. He mentions how his relationships with those guys fell apart. During the Use Your Illusion Tours, sometimes just Axl, Slash, and Duff would take a bow together after the show, and of course Matt felt left out. When confronted, Slash said it was because they were founders. Matt didn’t like feeling pushed aside at GN’R’s Rock Hall of Fame induction, when in truth, I think he’s just lucky to be there. To me, this is the heart of the Matt Sorum story. He usually joined a band already in progress, and since that’s the case, he never was seen on the same level. It’s the way it goes. In the end, it seems like he’s at peace with it. The last chapter left me with the impression that he feels lucky to have been part of so much, and looking at it objectively, I think that’s the way he should feel.

Most of the other stories in Matt’s book besides when he was in The Cult, GN’R, and Velvet Revolver were only of slight interest. There was one story about his brother throwing a frog on him, which led to a chase through the house that ended in disaster. It’s funny if you can relate to growing up in a house where these things happen. Some of the stuff about parents and other childhood memories probably gave him lifelong PTSD, though I believe he’s had a great enough life to hopefully compensate for it.

My personal interest in reading this book goes back to when Matt joined GN’R. I was a big fan of the band, as were so many people back then, and didn’t want to see Steven Adler go. I can still sum up Guns N’ Roses greatness in three words: Appetite for Destruction. Simple as that. Everything about that record was awesome. The artwork included a cross with five skulls, and Matt Sorum’s wasn’t one of ’em. Adler had come up through the clubs with the band, and was part of the original magic. Izzy said that whenever they had another drummer fill in for him, the songs never sounded right. Only Steven could play the songs they were meant to be played. And yeah, it had a sort of manic energy, almost like the song was on the edge of falling apart, but that sounded a lot better than Matt’s technically perfect drumming on the following records. No offense. Taking out Steven and putting in Matt changed the sound, and it just never was right again. Matt calls Steven’s drumming kinda “sloppy” in his book, and I won’t argue, but the music suffered without that style.

In 1992, I met Matt at a place called Fork’s Drum Closet in Nashville. He hadn’t been in GN’R for long, and was doing a promotional tour for Yamaha drums. The video for “You Could Be Mine” was recently released on MTV, and sounded great. That was maybe the best song , and Matt’s best drumming in his time with that band. Seemed like it could end up being a good fit. Everybody was pumped to see him, and super excited that the new record was about to come out. After he put on a clinic, he was signing stuff, and I still have the flyer he signed for me. No one had asked at that point, so I felt a little awkward, but I asked if I could take a picture with him. He smiled, and said, “Sure, man!” So, I came around the other side of the table and my buddy snapped it for me. Then everybody wanted to do it. Matt was a super nice guy. Great drummer, too. He hit hard as hell and very precise. Later on, when the new records came out, I lined up with the huge crowd around Tower Records at midnight, then we were herded through like cattle. That’s how highly anticipated those records were. Everybody had waited years for this moment. As my friend and I were driving home, listening to the new CDs, we gave every song a chance. Next. Next. Next. Skip that one. Sucks. Sucks. What is this crap? Those records were boring and uninspired. 90% garbage. Not Matt’s fault. That band had one great record in them, and then maybe a few other songs that are okay. He missed the prime time. The huge tours GN’R went on after that were the effect of still riding on their past glory. If those Illusion records had come out first, the band would’ve never become what it became.

So, this review probably went on too long, and got off the subject of the book. I guess it comes down to why I’m interested, and why you are, too. It’s likely because of his time in Guns N’ Roses. I think he could’ve said more, and been a little more nasty like the KISS guys were to one another, but he held back some of what he could’ve said. That’s just my impression. Maybe it’s for the best. Probably can’t win. People will be on the side of the dudes they consider titanic figures in music, and not a replacement drummer. Matt’s story is worth a read. I liked it, and read it pretty quickly. Glad he took the time to give fans of this sort of stuff some entertainment.

I waited so long for this book to be released on kindle. I really enjoyed it. I’m so glad Matt has turned his life around and living a happy & healthy life now. This book is very entertaining, very interesting and to be honest I wished it was longer because I enjoyed every single page and didn’t want it to end.

Easy enjoyable read.

I’m a Matt Sorum fan. Always found his personality appealing. This book moves along at a quick pace. But too quick. I wish there was more elaboration about his bandmates in GNR and also more details about the many groupies he experienced. A bit too surface-y and not deep enough substance like in SLASH’S book (still the best rock memoir I’ve ever read).

A fun book with a lot of ego

A good book that seemed to be more of a list of stars and musicians that Matt has met, played with, befriended and is happy to show them off for his audience. It reads more like a grocery list of accomplishments, drugs, bands, famous people, check, check and check.

Could’ve been great

I think this book was supposed to be released like 2 years ago or something. I’m pretty sure Axl fought hard to have a lot of the most interesting parts removed. There were some Stephanie Seymour stories that were initially in the book but disappeared by its actual release. The stories of all those great videos? Not here. The reunion drama? Not here. In the end this is just a story of a great drummer doing a superhuman quantity of drugs and booze. I’m glad he made it out alive but I wasn’t exactly rooting for him after reading how flippant he was the blessings in his career.

I don’t get the negative reviews. This is a good book with interesting stories. Perhaps I’m biased because I love The Cult and Neurotic Outsiders and I liked Velvet Revolver and Guns N Roses a lot. Four stars only because it left me with the feeling that, although it’s 250+ pages, there must be more, after having been in so many famous bands than debauchery and fights. Recommended.

Amazing points of views from a new member at that time. Good drummer and loyal . Matt deserves another chance in Guns, however Axl is the leader and greedy. So he got no chance!!
