Juan Martinez, the fiery prosecutor who convicted notorious murderess Jodi Arias for the disturbing killing of Travis Alexander, speaks for the first time about the shocking investigation and sensational trial that captivated the nation.Conviction The Untold Story of Putting Jodi Arias Behind Bars PDF

Through two trials, America watched with baited breath as Juan Martinez fought relentlessly to convict Jodi Arias of Murder One for viciously stabbing her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander to death. What emerged was a story wrought with sex, manipulation, and deceit that stunned the public at every turn. Arias, always playing the wronged and innocent woman, changed her story continually as her bizarre behavior surrounding the crime and its aftermath came to light. Unwavering, Arias and her defense team continued to play off the salacious details of the case, until she was finally found guilty and—controversially—sentenced to life behind bars.

Now, speaking openly for the first time, prosecutor Juan Martinez will unearth new details from the investigation that were never revealed at trial, exploring key facts from the case and the pieces of evidence he chose to keep close to the vest. Throughout the trials, his bullish and unfaltering prosecution strategy was both commended and criticized, and in his book, Martinez will illuminate the unique tactics he utilized in this case and how they lead to a successful conviction, and-for the first time-discuss how he felt losing the death penalty sentence he’d pursued for years.

Going beyond the news reports, Martinez will explore the truth behind the multiple facades of Jodi Arias. Sparring with her from across the stand, Martinez came to know Arias like no one else could, dissecting what it took for a seemingly normal girl to become a deluded, cunning, and unrepentant murderer.

With new stories from behind the scenes of the trial and Martinez’s own take on his defendant, the book takes you inside the mind of Jodi Arias like never before. Complete with 16 pages of photos from the case and trial, this book is the definitive account of the case that shocked America.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off …
February 16, 2016

I preordered this book and inhaled it from start to finish in one sitting. I followed the Arias trial from opening statements to her sentencing, becoming an admirer of Juan Martinez’ due to his apparent photographic memory and knowledge of all the evidence and his skillful and relentless courtroom style as he won justice for Travis Alexander and his family and friends.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off a couple of true “Perry Mason” moments during the trial. He shares how he came across the infamous gas can evidence in the form of a collection of receipts in a shoebox in Arias’ room at her grandparent’s home in Yreka, California. Arias had made sure she “had the gas receipts” to prove she was “nowhere near” Mesa, Arizona and the murder. However, Martinez famously produced the gas receipts from California and Salt Lake City with the accompanying bank records proving that she had 3 gas cans.. And having 3 gas cans was indicative of premeditation—therefore knocking self-defense off the table.

He sheds light on the so-called “pedophile letters” that were discussed in a hearing but never admitted as evidence in the trial. The utter unprofessionalism and dishonesty that most people observed by the Arias defense team during the trial was proven to be accurate when Martinez discloses that Nurmi , a female defense attorney and an investigator showed up unannounced (and unidentified as Arias’ defense team) to Deanna Reid’s home purporting to be people “involved in the case” who wanted to ask some questions about Travis “off the record.” The female defense attorney tried to be “chummy” with Deanna and produced one of the forged “pedophile letters’ for her to read which also contained unflattering things about Deanna. Deanna immediately saw the letters for what they were: forgeries by Jodi Arias. These letters were described by Nurmi as “100% verified” when he tried this same farce with Chris and Sky Hughes. This information proves without a doubt that Arias’ defense team MOST CERTAINLY DID attempt to argue that Travis was a pedophile—something that both Nurmi and Willmott pathetically and disingenuously tried to deny once the trial was over.

I enjoyed reading the few personal things that Martinez shared about the work he does—the fact that he never eats or drinks in his office so he doesn’t spill anything on court documents; his beginnings in Victorville, California and his immaculate work ethic.

It was fascinating to read the truth behind the circus that was Jodi Arias—all her combativeness, smug condescension, lies, mischaracterizations and absurd attempts at playing the demure victim from the prosecutor’s point of view.

While Martinez relates that he was criticized a great deal by the media and some trial watchers, it has been my experience that he is widely appreciated and admired for having the guts to not allow Arias to get away with her lies and ultimately, first degree, premeditated murder.

Great book, just right

I read this in a single sitting. I could not put it down. True Crime isn’t usually my cup of tea, but I had followed the trial and wanted to learn about Martinez’s perspective beyond what we could glean from his televised prosecution.

It is clear from early on in the book that this wasn’t going to be a ‘juicy tell-all’ and he won’t be slinging mud or casting disparagements about. Instead, he lays out an engaging preamble that takes us through all of the preparations for trial, the avenues of inquiry he was most gripped by, as well as the boons and set-backs in the construction of his case. We get a detailed portrait of Arias’ personality and character as Martinez saw it, including insight into how these impressions formed the basis for his strategy in prosecuting the case. Simply put, through a shrewd assessment of traits Arias likely saw as her strengths, he was able to turn them into weaknesses which were ultimately her undoing. Hubris is a cruel mistress.

The book is written in a clean, concise style. It is beautifully edited and strikes just the right tone. If Martinez were to publish another book, I will absolutely be on the pre-order list.
