Features of Conquering Lyme Disease PDF
Conquering Lyme Disease PDF-Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, with more than 300,000 cases diagnosed each year. However, doctors are deeply divided on how to diagnose and treat it, giving rise to the controversy known as the “Lyme Wars.” Firmly entrenched camps have emerged, causing physicians, patient communities, and insurance providers to be pitted against one another in a struggle to define Lyme disease and its clinical challenges. Health care providers may not be aware of its diverse manifestations or the limitations of diagnostic tests. Meanwhile, patients have felt dismissed by their doctors and confused by the conflicting opinions and dubious self-help information found online.
In this authoritative book, the Columbia University Medical Center physicians Brian A. Fallon and Jennifer Sotsky explain that, despite the vexing “Lyme Wars,” there is cause for both doctors and patients to be optimistic. The past decade’s advances in precision medicine and biotechnology are reshaping our understanding of Lyme disease and accelerating the discovery of new tools to diagnose and treat it, such that the great divide previously separating medical communities is now being bridged. Drawing on both extensive clinical experience and cutting-edge research, Fallon, Sotsky, and their colleagues present these paradigm-shifting breakthroughs in language accessible to both sides. They clearly explain the immunologic, infectious, and neurologic basis of chronic symptoms, the cognitive and psychological impact of the disease, as well as current and emerging diagnostic tests, treatments, and prevention strategies. Written for the educated patient and health care provider seeking to learn more, Conquering Lyme Disease gives an up-to-the-minute overview of the science that is transforming the way we address this complex illness. It argues forcefully that the expanding plague of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases can be confronted successfully and may soon even be reversed.

The Authors
Brian A Fallon is a physician and a psychiatrist with a particular interest in anxiety and in the neuropsychiatric manifestations of infectious diseases. Having graduated from Harvard College and Columbia University’s Schools of Medicine (MD) and Public Health (MPH), he now directs the Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center at the Columbia University Medical Center. While his initial work was on hypochondriasis, he switched his primary focus to the brain manifestations of infectious and immune diseases. A particular research priority is on helping patients with previously treated Lyme disease who are struggling with chronic symptoms such as brain fog, memory problems, fatigue, mood problems, and neuropathic pain. He and his colleague Dr. Sotsky and others recently wrote Conquering Lyme Disease to provide hope to patients, guidance to physicians, and clarity on the Lyme Disease controversies — including its manifestations, diagnostic tests, and treatment. Dr. Fallon has presented before the Centers of Disease Control, the Institute of Medicine, members of the U.S. Congress, as well as for public health agencies of Canada and Great Britain. His work has been hailed by leading scientific journals, including Lancet, Nature, and the New Scientist.

Michael E Ottlinger “his is a tremendous book.
It manages to capture and summarize background material beautifully, in a way that adds considerable interest, and helps bring along the reader who may be encountering a particular subject for the first time. But, unlike some books intended only for a more general reader, the authors go on to treat the subjects they tackle in each chapter with considerable sophistication and detail. In that respect, it possesses the best qualities of a well-edited medical textbook.
You can drink a little from it or drink a lot. If your aim is to understand the subject to the depths to which it can be understood, and to better appreciate what controversies exist, clinically and technically, this book will put you on track to do that. Finally, the extensive literature references which the authors provide will help you make the leap to the scientific and medical literature.”
Anne Baker “I often check books out at the library before spending my hard-earned money. I checked out this one and also The Everything Guide to Lyme Disease, which reads like a p.r. release from the CDC and their friends from Plum Island.
After being told by “The Everything Guide” that Chronic Lyme Disease doesn’t really exist, I really needed an antidote in the form of this book by Dr. Brian Fallon. I am only part-way through and will add to this review when I complete this wonderfully supportive, insightful and helpful book.”
