Un piccolo capolavoro non proprio recente, ma ancora insuperato. La lettura del neoplatonismo in chiave logica è un’idea interessante e che, soprattutto, è messa bene a frutto in quest’opera. Utilissimo ai logici della filosofia.

Great stories and insight for the common person, into the prison system in India.

Read the book in one day. Couldn’t put it down. I usually don’t read material related to Indian bureaucracy ( how interesting could it possibly be – I barely get through days when I have to get something done at any Govt. office, why would I then also READ about them?! ) but I read nice things about Sunetra’s book on Twitter and decided to give it a shot. Not only did I like Behind Bars, I also immediately bought Sunetra’s other book, Braking News, which was also a lovely read. I enjoy the way she tells the stories of each individual in Behind Bards, while attempting to stay neutral and simply report what she has seen and what each individual has shared with her. It’s a remarkable feat, especially when we’ve all heard horror stories about what actually happens in Indian prisons. The book is entertaining and stays on-point from beginning till end. That each of the individuals in the book felt they could trust the author with their stories, is a testament to the author’s professionalism & integrity.

If you’ve ever wanted a glimpse into what life is “behind bars”, this book is simple enough for the most “non-reader” type of person, yet gives a lot of insight into not only the prisons, the individuals but also Sunetra’s job as a journalist / reporter / story-teller and now author. Even if you do know, first hand, how the prison system works, these stories are also of the individuals who were actually behind bars and some still are. Apart from a couple of grammatical / language errors ( I’m being really petty here ), I’m very happy with my purchase and hope to get it signed by the author soon.

A fascinating expose of our prison system

Reviewed in India on 16 October 2017

I found this expose by the NDTV journalist about the goings-on in India’s prisons, mainly Tihar jail, fascinating & unputdownable. Though we all know that our prisons are no picnic spots, Sunetra’s accounts of the prison lives of 13 well-known personalities from diverse fields such as Amar Singh, A.N.Raja, Peter Mukerjea, Kobad Ghandy etc are bone-chilling in their descriptions of the absolutely corrupt, lawless & inhumane world that our so-called institutions of corrections have turned into. Crafted out of first-hand interviews with the prisoners, Sunetra’s descriptions can be pretty graphic, e.g, the conditions of the toilet, often only a hole on the floor, without water supply & overused ( & with ‘multi-colored stools ‘ ). The whole system operates only on payment of cash, even for basic facilities such as a place to lie down & sleep, to unheard-of luxuries like air-conditioner, non-veg food etc.No wonder, it is the rich & well-connected like Sahara’s Subrato Roy who are able to not only survive the harsh conditions, but even come out lightly , after a minimum period of incarceration. The prison & legal systems can be really harrowing for the under-privileged, who are routinely denied even contacts with family members & medical treatment for serious diseases. The author cites cases of some ill-fated prisoners , who loses all contact with their impoverished family members, as they cannot afford to pay the ‘speed money’ extracted for meeting the prisoner at jail. The book is to be read also for Sunetra’s accounts of the reactions of the rich & famous like the Union Minister A.N.Raja & the wily Amar Singh to their brush with the Tihar jail system. Her narratives of the judicial cases that landed these people in jail are often incomplete & one-sided, as that of Peter Mukerjea, as they remain in courts now, awaiting final verdicts. There are also some positive developments like a separate jail for political prisoners ( at Hyderabad ), where the UK -educated Naxalite, Kobad Ghandy, over 70 years old now, was finally transferred to after repeated pleas , from Tihar. His pathetic advice that if you have to go to jail, it is better to be in one of the Southern states, may be unsurprisingly true.
All in all, a valuable book to read for those interested in the ( non ) functioning of our legal system, often touted as the last resort for the unfortunate citizen.
