Marie T. Banich uses brain imaging techniques to understand the neural systems that enable us to direct actions and thoughts in a goal-oriented manner, often referred to as executive function. Her research findings have been published in leading journals, including Science. Among her professional experiences, Professor Banich has been a member of the MacArthur Foundation on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice, a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Verona, Italy, and a recipient of a James Cattell sabbatical award. Currently she serves as the co-Principal Investigator for the Colorado site of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, an unprecedented 10-year longitudinal study that uses neuroimaging to provide an unrivaled window on development of the adolescent brain and its influences on cognitive and emotional development.

Rebecca J. Compton has taught at Haverford College since 1999 and in 2012 she received Haverford’s prestigious Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. She received her B.A. from Vassar College, New York, and her Ph.D. in biological psychology from the University of Chicago. She is the recipient of several NSF and NIH grants for research in primarily undergraduate institutions and has served on the Education and Training Committee of the Society for Psychophysiological Research.

Great Information, but some quirks with the paperback edition

So far I am enjoying the quality of the book (from a student’s perspective, not professor), and appreciate that the edition includes references to publications as recent as 2017 (since this edition is from 2018).
One small problem has been that the paperback version does not have some of the figures described as being on the inside covers of the textbook. While certain figures are described well enough to find online fairly quickly, this is a problem I hope is resolved in future editions of the book (or is at least described as only being in the hardcover copy).

A good introduction to the field

Like previous editions, Banich and Compton have written a highly readable introduction to the field. Strengths of the text include interesting case studies, excellent illustrations, and up to date coverage of most areas discussed. One notable shortcoming is a lack of presentation and discussion of the major brain networks (such as the default more network) in any comprehensive or systematic framework. This is very surprising in light of the massive amount of research currently being conducted in this area. Interested readers may want to read the latest edition of Kolb and Whishaw for another perspective.

Learned a lot, but slowly

Ms. Banich’s prose was enjoyable to read and easy to understand, and she made excellent and extensive use of clarifying examples. This book was a good introduction to the field of cognitive neurology, encompassing both the science and history of science. Only very rarely was I left wanting for more information or clarification.

I do believe the text could be more concise, to my taste, as she is wont to reiterate points and explain herself more than is absolutely necessary, and as a result reading this book felt more like slowly absorbing neuroscience from a creamy stew of information than the act of analytically deciphering the dry, mechanical, scientific writing that I am accustomed to.

The only real complaint I have about this book is the poor editing. Grammar mistakes, copied fragments of text, and the like aren’t abundant but they are certainly present and for me were disappointing to see, if only mildly distracting. I believe greater concision would reduce the number of errors as well.

Nevertheless, I would recommend the text to anyone interested in learning neurology for the first time.

This is a fairly clearly written, concise overview of a vast and fast- expanding field. Kindle ed. is correctly formatted. Well illustrated. Index is easy to use.

Good book, but with many mistakes

The book is really good and cover most of the cognitive neuroscience topics but I this edition it has many logical mistakes like wrong functions of the specific brain structure which is quite annoying.

After only two weeks I haven’t come close to reading it all, but from topics I have looked up, it is excellent. I have done some grad neuroscience and wanted more about function and behaviour. This book fills that want. I could have bought Klob and Wishaw, who used to be at the same university as I, but it is so much more expensive and as said, this book fills the gap I wanted to fill.
Excellent paper, printing and binding. Excellent value.

Excellent bouquin, plein d’illustrations, tous est abordé de manière assez approfondie, tout ce qu’on attend d’un livre de cette dimension ( format encyclopédie, c’est un gros livre !) Seul hic c’est dans la langue de Shakespeare.. si vous ne lisez pas couramment cette langue passez votre chemin car c’est très technique et complexe…
