The Author

Gilbert R. Upchurch Jr., MD, is the Edward M. Copeland III and Ann & Ira Horowitz Department Chair of the University of Florida Department of Surgery. He joined UF in 2017 with an international reputation as an acclaimed clinician, researcher and educator in the study and treatment of aortic and vascular disease. He is an exemplary teacher, having received many teaching awards over the course of his career.

Prior to joining UF, Dr. Upchurch served as the chief of vascular and endovascular surgery in the department of surgery and the medical director of the Heart and Vascular Center at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was also the William H. Muller Jr. professor of surgery as well as a professor in the department of molecular physiology and biological physics.



Earning his medical degree at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and training at Harvard University, Boston University and the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Upchurch maintains active roles on numerous peer-reviewed journals and professional organizations. He serves on the editorial boards of many prestigious publications, including the Annals of Surgery, Surgery, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, JAMA Surgery, and the Journal of Vascular Surgery. He has also served as editor or associate editor on 13 books, including “Greenfield’s Surgery: Scientific Principles & Practice,” “Fischer’s Mastery of Surgery” and “Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery.”

1. My only regret is that I did not find out about this textbook sooner in my career (ie. medical school or intern year of general surgery residency). It is an excellent adjunct and an excellent textbook in it’s own right. A must read for every general surgeon in addition to textbooks like Schwartz, Greenfield, or Cameron.
   The cases are broad based and thorough, detailed workup and thought processes behind treatments are described as well as common must know procedures.
   Just an excellent book, cannot wait for the next addition. I hope they keep adding more and more cases with the same depth.
2. This book will cover about 70-80% of what you need to know. Some chapters, like redo parathyroidectomy seem excessive, especially in an age where a graduating general surgeon will almost certainly not do a redo by themselves or without endocrine fellowship. I used it as the basis of a series of ABSITE lectures for junior residents, like it alot
3. I used this for preparing for my oral boards, in addition to taking the Osler course. I found this WAY more helpful, and at one tenth the price of Osler! I read a lot of other books for the boards, and this is by far the best (I passed my boards, btw). Highly recommended!
