The Writers

Very Short Introductions (VSI) is a book series published by the Oxford University Press (OUP). The books are concise introductions to particular subjects, intended for a general audience but written by experts. Most are under 200 pages long. While authors may present personal viewpoints, the books are meant to be “balanced and complete” as well as thought provoking.[1]

The series began in 1995, and by April 2018 there were 607 titles, published or announced.[2][3] The books have been commercially successful,[4] and have been published in more than 25 languages.[5] Institutions can subscribe to an online service to allow their users to read the books.[6]

Most of the books have been written specifically for the series, but around 60 were recycled from earlier OUP publications: several had been in OUP’s Past Masters series, and numbers 17–24 used chapters from The Oxford Illustrated History of Britain (1984).

If you understand food measured in grams this may be your book
February 9, 2020

I didn’t realize that this was from Great Britain and their measurements aren’t like our. I wanted to know how many cups or tablespoons, not grams of food. I didn’t want to have to convert everything so I am trying to send it back. There are lots of pictures but it still doesn’t tell me the amounts that I understand.

“Pretty” useless

This book is well organized. Abundant pictures of the food shown in various portions on plates or in bowls. Not something that is needed. I was looking for something that zeroed in on carbs in veggies, as I am antibread, pasta, and grains. Two pages was all there was on veggies carb amounts. I don’t recommend the book unless you like lots of pretty pictures. I returned it, as it was not helpful for me. The overall quality of the print, paper, and pictures were excellent.

Pictorial pictures of food proportions. Returned because I wanted a smaller version that I could take with me.

Very clear information, and not only shows portions tells you size of plate illustrating the portion. Gives you information on take outs and eating out. Extremely good book.

Good book with a massive omission – great pity.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 27, 2019

I bought this book, purely and simply, as I like to know what’s in the foods I put into my body!
Initially, the book looked full of promise – clear information, great photos and recommended by Diabeties UK.

It’s only when you’ve had a read through that you begin to notice some shortcomings….

Whilst the photos are of superb quality, is it really necessary to have six photos of different sized portions of noodles – one or maybe two is great – but six???

That format is repeated throughout the book with six photos of pasta shells, pasta twists, basmati rice, brown rice, white rice etc. It becomes rather annoying after a while.

Similarly, there are six photos of beans on toast – with the beans quantified at 65gms/ 130/ 195/ 195 with 1 & 2 slices of bread. It would have been more useful to say ‘one slice of toast and half a large can of beans’.

Each food photo shows what’s in the foods by way of Carbs/ Cals/ Protein/ Fat/ SatFat/ Fibre. But, strangely, not one scrap of information on what’s contained in the listed foods for the most talked about carb – SUGAR!

This is a massive omission. In my view it takes a book which could have been a five star down to a two star. It needs a revision.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

This is a great book. I purchased Carb & Calorie Counter for my brother who is diabetic. He says it is now his shopping ‘bible’ and has become invaluable for checking the dietary values of the food he consumes. The great news is: by using the book as a dietary guide, he has (literally within a few days) reduced his ‘bloods’ …. to such an extent that his nurse may shortly reassess his medication. I was so impressed by the amount of information contained in this book: the easy to read/understand format; clever illustrations and brilliant pictures also the portion/carb/cal guide, that I purchased a further two copies – one for myself and one for a friend who would like to reduce her weight. Although neither of us suffer from diabetes, we have found the book excellent as a carb and calorie guide (there are a few startling surprises!) This book is a ‘must’ for all those who would like to know the dietary values of everyday foodstuffs. It is a practically fool-proof guide for people of all ages, but especially those with diabetes or those of a ‘certain age’ who may need to evaluate and regulate their food consumption in order to keep fit and healthy. This guide has the approval of Diabetes UK and is a great ‘tool’, however, anyone requiring additional clarification, or taking medication, professional advice is recommended.

As an older Type 2 diabetic I have been struggling to lose weight and control my sugar levels. My diabetic nurse recommended this book and it has revolutionised my life. I cut down to about 110 carb units a day (about half of normal intake) and lost 5lbs in a week as well as seing a drop of 2 points in my blood sugars. The marvel is I am not hungry and can eat as much as I like of non carb foods. I thought a low carb diet meant giving up bread, potatoes and rice but with this book you can easily gauge portion size and carbs as everything is photpgraphed so I can have it all! I have even slipped in the odd hot cross bun – at 32 carbs it just gets taken off my allowance for the day. Struggling with weight loss and blood sugars? Give this a go.
