amazing!

This is a wonderful glimpse into the struggle of coming out and cultural change. Ved, a closeted gay man was blindsided when his boyfriend of four years announced they needed to breakup because he would be marrying woman. Broken hearted, Ved goes on to build a wall around his heart refusing to let anyone else in. He engages in no string attached sex with men he meets through a hook up app.

Getting his heart broken is both the only thing he is avoiding. Ved’s mother is on a serious mission to get him married and he is equally serious about avoiding that prospect. But it seems he may not be able to avoid it forever. During one of her calls, Ved’s mother announces she has the perfect wealthy young India girl. After putting her off for a while, Ved gives in and goes on a date with Disha completely expecting it to be a disaster and making a mental plan to tell his mother it did not work out. What he didn’t anticipate was the extent to which he would enjoy Disha’s company or that they would develop a true friendship. Because of this friendship, both Ved and Disha mutually resigned themselves to marry each other to please their parents and as the lesser of many evils. Just when Ved decides to bite the bullet, he meets Carlos, the perfect man who shows up at the exact wrong moment.

I really enjoyed the narration on audible and the story itself. I appreciate the way the author depicts Ved’s struggle to please his parents and build a relationship with Carlos, while preserving his friendship with Disha.

Good storyline, wonderful world building, strong characters and an epic HEA!

The characters and location are very different from most gay romance books I have read.

After finishing the book, I appreciate the efforts of the author in writing it. I struggled with various parts of the book and the manner in which the central character develops. Admittedly, the main character is struggling with acceptance of his own sexuality and like many of us that lived during those days when “being openly gay” was not tolerated, it far too easy to strive towards conformity.

Nevertheless, I found that the character seemed to lose sight of the proper action or actions he should have taken. I admit that moving forward to acceptance of one’s own sexual orientation is often guided and helped by another who has been through the process. So yes there are many actions that the author has the main character take which left me somewhat bewildered.

Perhaps some of these experiences rang too true for myself.

In any event, this book is overall a “feel good” read. So if you suspend reality and just let the story play out, you will find that the various characters reach the new parts of their lives and move forward.

I would willing give this book 3-1/2 stars but alas only whole stars are allowed so I am rounding down.

Charming, Uplifting Romance in Mumbai
February 4, 2022

Ved Mehta is a wealthy 38 year old man living in Mumbai and Vice President of his father’s electronic company. His parents are divorced but they pressure him to get married and start a family. His mother arranges a date with Disha, the daughter of another wealthy family with an entertainment business. Ved likes Disha a lot and goes along with their matchmaking but holds a secret. He’s gay and hasn’t come out to anyone in his life. One day he meets Carlos on Grindr and the two start talking, changing Ved’s perspective on relationships.

I really loved this sweet, uplifting romance novel. Though I predicted what would happen at the end, this was a really wonderful journey with Ved and Carlos and Disha. I haven’t read many novels set in India, but Mumbai sounds really amazing, and here the city is almost a character in the novel. The descriptions of all the different dishes were so good, I had to go out and get Indian food after. (I’m still craving gulab jamun.) If you like stories about coming out, finding love, discovering who you are, especially for middle-aged folks, this is for you. Fans of The Charm Offensive will enjoy this one.

This is s totally different story than what I usually read. The plot is a familiar one in that it is about finding one’s own bliss even when it means bucking tradition. The issue is handling one’s own sexuality which involves pleasing parents and the status quo, or does it? The story is set in India but is happening on any given day all over the world. At issue here too is the parents pushing for a say in choosing a marriage partner. What is it like to live within boundaries expecting a young person to just go jumping through the hoops of life with little or no say? Most unique is this story tells about a same-sex relationship from the inside although it faces disapproval from government and business. Very tastefully done. You will learn something, I am sure.
