Good supplemental review book
February 10, 2015

If I could give 3.5 stars I would, but I’ll round up to 4 since I have to choose.

I’ll start by saying that I am a PA student on clinical rotations. Many people in my class recommended these books to help study for the PAEA end of rotation exams. I already used the Surgery Blueprints, which I liked, and was a great tool to help me do well on the exam.

This book doesn’t quite live up to the same standard I had with the Surgery Blueprints. The chapters in this book did a great job of explaining everything. It made for a long read, but spread out over the course of my rotation it was quite manageable. The clinical vignettes at the end of each chapter were a good review. However, as many others have said, some of these were sloppily done. Often, there would be a set of questions without a scenario, essentially asking you three times in a row what you would do now without any information, making them essentially pointless. Overall though I found these questions to be more helpful and better at drilling home the important information than the practice test at the end. Also, there were several questions that had the wrong answer in the answer key, i.e. it would say the answer was E, but if you read the explanation to the answer, the actual correct answer would be D. The practice exam at the end was very challenging, and probably not quite as useful and helpful as the end of chapter questions. The clinical vignette questions were more on par for what I saw with the PAEA end of rotation exam.

Long story short, this book helped me pass the PAEA end of rotation exam, and was a good resource on my clinical rotation. Could use some improvements though, would easily get 4-5 stars if the careless mistakes in the book were corrected. I still recommend this book.

Makes learning and retaining information easier
May 13, 2016

I got this book at the beginning of my 3rd year Ob/Gyn clerkship. I was initially put off from buying this based on other reviews that suggested that this book was a bit overly dense. In fact, I have found this book quite excellent. This book is in paragraph form, but it does highlight important points in bold, in end of chapter summaries, and tables/figures throughout the text. The writing is in paragraph form, but I found that the book reads quickly and is understandable. I also studied from a friend’s copy of First Aid for the Ob/Gyn Clerkship, and I ended up finding Blueprints easier to learn from. Blueprints had enough information that I was able to quickly understand and remember the information presented. With other books, I have felt like I am trying to memorize a series of unrelated bullet-point facts, but Blueprints was very helpful for me. As others have said, I would not recommend this book for cramming right before the shelf or boards. However, this book answered the questions that came up on my rotation (I could pretty much just search the index, and I was sent to a page that explained whatever new, confusing topic the residents and attendings were discussing!), and prepared me well for the shelf. I would recommend this book to anyone who is willing to use the down-time on L&D to look up material and prepare for exams.

Comprehensive and readable, but beware of outdated practice pattern info
December 24, 2014

This book is very comprehensive and is more of a readable text, which I tend to prefer over condensed outline-type material.

However, the problem with this book is that a lot of the practice patterns in Ob/Gyn have changed since it was originally published. For example, the ACOG guidelines for cervical cancer screening were changed in 2012 and the book hasn’t been changed to reflect those details. Given that I found several facts that were outdated, I didn’t feel that I could trust it to use it to study for the shelf.

A helpful (but long) Read
May 12, 2013

I ordered this book during my Ob/gyn clerkship as a MS3. It reads like a textbook, and therefore requires a little bit of ramp-up time to get into, and a little more digging to find facts on the fly. So it’s not really a book to carry with you on the wards for those 5-10 minute downtime periods, but it’s a good read if you’ve got an hour or two to kill (plus it’s physically too big for white coat pockets). I found it to be helpful in studying for the shelf, though it should be combined with other question-based resources (Pre-Test, Case Files, or UWorld) to round out the experience.

I did have a little bit of downtime during Labor and Delivery, and was able to power through about 25% of this book. I don’t feel like that time was wasted, and would definitely recommend Blueprints for people looking for a narrative review without the nitty gritty of a true textbook.

Pretty good book

Pretty good book. Covers all the necessary topics for the shelf exam and rotations, but it is pretty dry. The included questions are nice. I only read through a few chapters and mostly used questions from UWorld and APGO.

Good for the shelf exam
December 7, 2014

Great review book for the OB/GYN shelf. I gave it 4 stars because I didn’t care for the questions as much, I prefer to use a question bank, I feel like the questions in the book are not on the same level as the questions I saw on my shelf. Book reads more like a textbook which I prefer to case files. Ultimately you will have to determine what works best for you and go with that.

Great for OBG rotations
March 3, 2017

Amazing resource for OBG. Used it throughout my OBG rotation and it answered all the basic questions. It sometimes go into depth but pretty high yield overall. There are mistakes in the questions but I got over them.

Not specific enough

This book is all right for obgyn rotation, misses some points here and there but nothing you wouldn’t pick up during rotations anyway. Wouldn’t be my only book to study from, though.

Very helpful review
Reviewed in Canada on June 4, 2013

This book somehow managed to be both concise and comprehensive. It’s a great review (or even starting point) for medical students who are in their clerkship.

I like the organization of the book, as it allows you to be selective in your reading based on cases seen in the clinic. I also think that the clinical vignettes at the end of each chapter provide a pretty good way to make sure you’ve understood the overall concepts.
While I thought the pictures/graphs/tables included were helpful, it would have been helpful in some cases to have a few more (particularly dealing with anatomy).
