What I liked about this book–The protagonist is likeable. The story was a trainwreck that was entertaining to watch for the most part.
What I wished the author had done differently–The protagonist’s growth shift didn’t really happen over time in the book, but rather all at once. It would have been nice to watch the change slowly happen. Also, there was too much of the same “preachiness” about drug selling from too many characters who were unconnected. While I believe that the opinion stated played into the theme, it didn’t make sense at all for those characters to say nearly the same thing, over and over. Rather, it would have been better to take that opinion and parse it into bits and pieces throughout, but not the whole thing.
What I disliked about the book? How the teenager was portrayed. I’m nearly 50, and I know quite a few teenagers (and remember being one myself AND grieving a close loss). I get that everyone’s got this mental stereotype about teenagers, and that the situation was difficult to poke at about teenage rebellion, but the grief wasn’t shown in a realistic way. There wasn’t enough shock involved. That could have been done better, but instead the teenager felt a bit one-dimensional. I /know/ it was a background character, but it didn’t add much to the story to show it in that way.”
Kelle “You have what appears to be the idyllic life you have been married to your high school sweetheart who was the high school quarterback. You live in an exclusive neigborhood and a teenage daughter who is at the point in life that she is always trying your patience. It also appears that you have plenty of money. The downside is you have a mother in law who despises you and you really do not fit in with the snobby group of women. But suddenly your world is turned upside down when you find out your husband has been murdered and your life as you know it is built on a house of cards. You find out that your husband owes someone alot of money and now they expect you to cover the debt. Then you find how far you can really push yourself. So is the life of Alison Tanner. This book was a pretty quick read but i did find it a little predictable at times and I did find the main character exasperating at points in the book . I would rate this book 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.”
